Spain has become one of the most sought-after relocation destinations in Europe for Indian families and professionals, and the reasons are not hard to find: a climate that rewards outdoor living, a lower cost of living than much of northern Europe, a growing technology and services economy in Madrid and Barcelona, and residence routes that have genuinely opened the door to skilled arrivals from outside the EU. Indian engineers join Barcelona’s 22@ innovation district, families settle along the Mediterranean coast from Málaga to Valencia, and entrepreneurs build businesses in a country that has actively courted skilled migration. For everyone making that journey, the household or the office still has to physically arrive — and arrive on schedule. Seemleius exists to make the logistics of the move match the confidence of the decision.
A move from India to Spain begins on the India side, and that is where the discipline has to start: export customs clearance through ICEGATE at Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai Port or Cochin, the shipping bill filed under the Customs Act, AD code registration with the originating port, and a household or office packed to a standard that will survive close to 6,000 nautical miles of sea transit. That preparation is every bit as important as what happens at the Spanish end — and it is precisely where coordination gaps appear when the India side is treated as an afterthought. Once the container reaches Valencia or Barcelona, the Spanish side begins: clearance with the Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria (AEAT) under the EU Customs Code, the question of 21% IVA import VAT, and the transfer-of-residence relief that — correctly claimed — exempts used personal effects from both import duty and IVA. The qualifying conditions are the ones set out in the EU relief regulation: normal residence outside the customs territory for a continuous period of at least twelve months, and possession and use of the goods at the former residence for at least six months before the move.
The India–Spain corridor
Sea freight is the backbone of this corridor for household and commercial volumes. Container vessels from Nhava Sheva and Mundra call at Valencia and Barcelona — Spain’s two largest container ports — while Algeciras, on the Strait of Gibraltar, is one of the busiest transhipment hubs in the Mediterranean and frequently appears in the routing. Transit times are typically 22 to 30 days port to port depending on the service and intermediate calls. Chennai Port and Cochin give South Indian origin cities a strong gateway of their own. From Valencia, onward road delivery reaches Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Málaga, Bilbao and every Spanish address — with the central plateau and the coastal corridors all well served by the national autovía network.
Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) into Madrid-Barajas (MAD) or Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) serves moves where the timeline simply cannot absorb sea transit. Most India–Spain air routing connects through a European or Gulf hub, putting a shipment on the ground in Spain within a couple of days door to airport. We are candid about what air freight costs — typically four to six times the per-kilogram price of sea — and we help you weigh that against your travel date, your school term or your office opening date, so the mode you choose is the one your timeline actually requires.
Why the India end matters so much
Indian export clearance
Shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code registration, FEMA-aware documentation and Indian customs clearance handled at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin — so the shipment leaves India correctly and any GST refund or LUT position is preserved.
Spain’s customs regime
Import declarations to the AEAT under the EU Customs Code, EORI registration where required, 21% IVA treatment confirmed in advance, and transfer-of-residence relief claimed accurately for used personal effects, evidenced against the qualifying periods — twelve months’ residence outside the EU, six months’ possession and use of the goods.
Sea and air options
Sea via Valencia or Barcelona for household and commercial volumes (22 to 30 days); air via Madrid or Barcelona when the schedule demands it, routed through a European or Gulf hub.
One coordinator, both ends
The same person manages your India packing survey, ICEGATE shipping bill and export documentation, sea or air dispatch, and Spanish delivery — no handover gap between origin and destination.
Who moves on this corridor
- Skilled professionals and tech talent — engineers, IT specialists and consultants from Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Delhi NCR heading to Madrid’s services economy and Barcelona’s technology and startup cluster
- Remote workers and independent professionals — Indian professionals basing themselves along the Mediterranean coast while working for employers elsewhere, a group that has grown quickly since Spain opened routes for them under the Startups Law
- Families of independent means and retirees — households choosing Spain’s lifestyle, climate and healthcare, often settling in Valencia, Málaga or the Costa del Sol
- Indian businesses and entrepreneurs — companies establishing a Spanish or wider European base, frequently anchored in Madrid or Barcelona for market access and talent
Where we deliver in Spain
We move regularly to all of Spain’s major cities and their surrounding regions: Madrid and the central Comunidad de Madrid; Barcelona and Catalonia; Valencia and the Comunidad Valenciana; Málaga and the Costa del Sol; Seville and Andalusia; Bilbao and the Basque Country. New arrivals in Spain generally deal with two administrative steps early: the foreigner identification number, without which little else proceeds, and the empadronamiento — registration on the local padrón at the town hall, which confirms an address. Both sit with the Spanish authorities and, where help is wanted, a gestor or lawyer. We are a relocation partner, not an immigration adviser. If your destination is not one of these, ask us — we deliver across the whole country.
Starting the move
- India-side survey. We assess volume and contents at your home or office in India — in person in major cities, or by video — and return a clear quote with sea and air options explained, including realistic Valencia or Barcelona arrival windows.
- Export documentation. Indian export paperwork is prepared: shipping bill filed through ICEGATE, AD code confirmed, packing list, invoice and any FEMA-related declarations relevant to your move. None of this is left to the final week.
- Pack and dispatch. Our crew packs to export standard from your India origin, and the shipment is booked and dispatched on the confirmed route to Valencia, Barcelona, Madrid or Barcelona airport.
- Clear and deliver in Spain. We manage AEAT import clearance, advise on the transfer-of-residence relief, and coordinate onward road delivery to your address in Spain.
Choose the guide below that fits your situation, or request a quote and your coordinator will walk you through the right starting point for a move from India to Spain.
The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are a different import
This is the point most often missed on the corridor, and it catches people who have already done their reading. Spain is one country, but it is not one customs and tax territory. The Canary Islands sit inside the EU customs union and outside the EU VAT area. Ceuta and Melilla sit outside both. A container from Chennai to Santa Cruz de Tenerife and a container from Chennai to Madrid do not clear the same way, are not taxed the same way, and should never be quoted as though they were.
In practice: goods arriving in the Canaries meet the EU Common Customs Tariff exactly as they would at Valencia, so the duty position and the transfer-of-residence duty relief behave as they do on the peninsula. What changes is the indirect tax. There is no 21% IVA in the islands. The Canaries levy IGIC (Impuesto General Indirecto Canario) instead, at a materially lower general rate, and certain categories additionally attract AIEM, a local levy that protects island production. Ceuta and Melilla, outside the customs union altogether, run their own IPSI regime.
The consequence that surprises people most is an internal one. A consignment moving from mainland Spain to Las Palmas or Tenerife needs a customs declaration, even though both ends are Spanish and both are in the European Union. Land goods at Valencia and forward them to Gran Canaria and you have created a second customs event, with a second set of costs and a second opportunity for a hold. Where a service allows it, that is a good reason to route island cargo directly into Las Palmas de Gran Canaria or Santa Cruz de Tenerife rather than assuming a mainland port plus a domestic leg is the simpler path.
The Balearics are the opposite case, and worth stating because families weighing Mallorca against Tenerife often assume islands behave alike. Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza sit fully inside the EU VAT area. A move to Palma is a peninsula-equivalent import with ordinary IVA treatment, and the only real difference is the feeder or ferry leg out of Valencia or Barcelona.

Suez, the Cape, and why two quotes for the same lane differ by a fortnight
The direct sea route from western India to Spain runs down the Arabian Sea, through the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, and into the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal. When conditions in the Red Sea push carriers to route south around the Cape of Good Hope instead, the same origin and the same destination acquire roughly ten days to a fortnight of extra sailing — and schedules become less reliable as well as longer. That is not fine print. It is the difference between a container landing before a school term and landing after it, and it is the first thing to establish when comparing two quotations that look otherwise identical.
Transhipment is the second variable. A box loaded at Nhava Sheva rarely sails one unbroken leg to your delivery port. It is more often relayed at Jebel Ali, at Salalah, or at Algeciras itself, which sits at the mouth of the Mediterranean and is among the busiest relay hubs in it. Every relay is a place a connection can be missed. When your coordinator quotes a transit time, the service, the relay points and a realistic window come with it — not the shortest figure the schedule technically permits.
| Consideration | Sea | Air |
|---|---|---|
| Typical transit | 22–30 days on direct routing; add ten days to a fortnight if the service goes round the Cape | Two to four days including a European or Gulf relay |
| Suits | Full households, office fit-outs, vehicles, commercial volume | A working set of belongings, urgent commercial consignments |
| Spanish gateway | Valencia, Barcelona, Algeciras, Bilbao | Madrid (MAD), Barcelona (BCN), Valencia (VLC), Málaga (AGP) |
| Relative cost | The baseline for this corridor | Several times the sea equivalent for the same weight |
The answer is more often a split than either extreme. Twenty or thirty kilos of clothes, laptops, school files and kitchen basics by air, with the household following by sea, costs a fraction of air-freighting everything and removes the month of living out of two suitcases while a container crosses two oceans.
When to book, and the weeks Spain effectively closes
Two calendars govern this corridor and they do not line up. India’s is weather-led: the south-west monsoon from June into September slows packing days at coastal origins and raises the premium on genuine moisture protection for a long sea leg. Spain’s calendar is social. August is the month the country steps back — a large share of small businesses, building administrators and municipal offices run at reduced capacity, street-occupation permits take longer to come through, and crews are carrying furniture through afternoons that regularly pass 38°C in Madrid, Seville and Córdoba. An August delivery is not impossible. It is slower, harder on the crew and harder on the goods, and it should be scheduled with that understood rather than discovered.
The local calendar counts for as much as the national one. Semana Santa closes streets across Andalusia for a week. Las Fallas takes much of central Valencia out of commission through March. Barcelona’s La Mercè and Madrid’s San Isidro each remove a week’s worth of convenience from their districts. Six to eight weeks of lead time is a comfortable booking window for a sea move on this lane; make it longer if your delivery falls inside any of those.
Common questions about moving from India to Spain
Does someone need to be in Spain when the shipment clears?
Generally yes. Transfer-of-residence relief is granted to a person who has actually moved, and Spanish customs looks for a residence position that is established rather than promised. In practical terms the container should arrive after you do, not before — one more argument for planning backwards from the Spanish arrival date instead of forwards from the Indian packing date.
Which Spanish port should the shipment come into?
Valencia for Madrid, the centre and the east coast; Barcelona for Catalonia and the north-east; Algeciras where the service routes that way and the destination is in Andalusia; Bilbao where a north-European string serves the Basque Country and Cantabria better than a Mediterranean one. The right answer is whichever combination of sailing frequency and inland distance produces the shorter total door-to-door time, which is worth checking rather than assuming.
What cannot travel in the container?
The standard exclusions are firm: no aerosols, paints, solvents, fuels, gas cylinders, fireworks, or loose lithium batteries in cartons. Alcohol is a duty and excise question rather than a flat prohibition, and is usually better left behind. Plant material, seeds and untreated timber are a plant-health matter at the EU border. Food is the category families most underestimate — the pantry staples that instinctively go into an Indian household consignment run into EU restrictions on products of animal origin, so the spice tins are fine and the ghee, the pickles with a meat base and the dairy are not.
Can Seemleius help with the residence side of the move?
No. We are a relocation partner, not an immigration adviser. Our work is the survey, the packing, Indian export clearance, the freight, the Spanish import declaration and the delivery. Residence documentation, the foreigner identification number and the town-hall registration are matters for the Spanish authorities and, if you want help with them, a Spanish gestor or lawyer. Give us the start dates and we will build the move schedule around them.
