Household & Personal Moves to Germany
Relocating your household from India to Germany — export-packed at the India end, shipped from Nhava Sheva or Chennai, cleared through German customs and delivered to your new home.
A household move from India to Germany is typically attached to a date that cannot flex: an employer’s reporting date, a school term start, or the 14-day Anmeldung (address registration) deadline at the local Bürgeramt. The move has to be planned around that fixed point, working backwards from the German delivery to the India packing date. Sea transit from Nhava Sheva to Hamburg takes roughly 25 to 32 days; Zoll customs processing and onward road delivery add time. Getting the planning right at the India end is what keeps the German arrival on schedule — and what protects your Übersiedlungsgut transfer-of-residence relief, which removes import VAT and duty on used personal effects when correctly claimed on Form 0350.
Seemleius household and personal relocation from India to Germany coordinates both ends: the ICEGATE shipping bill, export clearance and packing in India, and the ATLAS import declaration, Form 0350 relief application and final delivery in Germany. One coordinator holds the thread from the first survey in Mumbai or Bengaluru to the last furniture placement in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen, Munich-Schwabing, Berlin-Mitte, Hamburg-Eppendorf, Düsseldorf-Oberkassel or Stuttgart-West.
The India export side
Personal effects and household goods exported from India require a shipping bill filed electronically on ICEGATE — the Indian Customs export declaration system. The goods must be inventoried, valued and described accurately; the shipping bill must be consistent with what is in the container; and the AD code of the originating port must be registered against the exporter or shipper of record. We prepare all of this as a standard part of the move, not as an add-on. Families who have moved before and been handed a stack of export forms to fill out themselves will appreciate the difference.
For families with financial assets and investments in India, FEMA (the Foreign Exchange Management Act) is a relevant background consideration when emigrating — particularly around resident-to-non-resident account reclassification, NRO/NRE structures and any pending GST refund or LUT (Letter of Undertaking) positions for those leaving a business behind. While FEMA compliance is a matter for your chartered accountant, we can point you toward the right questions to ask before the move is finalised. We will also flag where the shipping bill data interacts with downstream tax positions, so nothing is filed in haste.
What travels in a household shipment from India
- Furniture — sofas, beds, wardrobes, dining sets; dismantled for export, reassembled at the German address (and sized against typical Frankfurt or Munich flat dimensions, which often differ from Indian rooms)
- Kitchen equipment — appliances, cookware, utensils; the contents of an Indian kitchen packed carefully for sea transit, with a note that 220V Indian appliances generally run on Germany’s 230V grid via Schuko sockets
- Religious and cultural items — puja items, artwork, textiles; handled with awareness of what they represent
- Books, personal libraries and study materials — important for students and academics on this corridor
- Electronics — laptops, cameras, entertainment systems; packed against humidity and handling across the sea route
- Clothing and personal effects for the whole family
Freight options from India to Germany
Sea freight from Nhava Sheva
The primary gateway for Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad and western India moves — consolidated groupage for smaller households, full container for larger volumes, into Hamburg or Bremerhaven in 25 to 32 days.
Sea freight from Chennai or Cochin
The natural gateway for Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and South India moves, with good connectivity to Hamburg and Bremerhaven and onward road delivery across Germany.
Air freight from BOM, DEL or MAA
Lufthansa and Air India direct services into Frankfurt or Munich for urgent or time-critical shipments when the sea timeline does not fit around a fixed start date.
German delivery anywhere
Onward road delivery from Hamburg or Frankfurt to any address in Germany — Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart or beyond, with awareness of city Umweltzonen sticker requirements.
Anmeldung, GEZ and the first fortnight in Germany
Germany is a country of paperwork sequences, and the first fortnight after arrival sets the tone. Anmeldung at the local Bürgeramt — the address registration that triggers your Steueridentifikationsnummer (tax ID), GKV statutory health insurance enrolment and the address record other German offices read from — must be completed within 14 days, and is enforced. The Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord confirmation) is what your Bürgeramt appointment will ask for, so it pays to have it issued the day the lease starts. Shortly after, the Rundfunkbeitrag (GEZ TV and radio licence, currently €18.36 per month per household) finds you automatically through the Anmeldung data — it is mandatory regardless of whether you own a television. The sequence is set out in each city’s own municipal guidance, and knowing it exists is what stops the first month in Germany producing surprises.
Schools, neighbourhoods and finding your way in
For Indian families with school-age children, the German schools system is a substantial early decision: Grundschule (primary, ages 6 to 10) followed by the streamed secondary tracks of Gymnasium (academic, leading to Abitur and university), Realschule (intermediate) and Gesamtschule (comprehensive). Many Indian families opt for one of the international schools — the International School of Munich, Frankfurt International School, Berlin International School, ISD International School of Düsseldorf or the Stuttgart International School — particularly where a return to India remains on the horizon or English-medium continuity matters. Indian community life is strongest around Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen and the Bahnhofsviertel, Berlin-Mitte and Charlottenburg, and the engineering belt around Stuttgart and Munich — with cultural anchors, Indian grocery shops, mandirs, gurudwaras and Sunday cricket leagues established for decades.
A note on Germany’s customs expectations
German customs is documentation-driven. A household shipment clears Zoll without difficulty when the inventory is accurate, the valuations are defensible, the ATLAS declaration matches the shipping bill, and the Übersiedlungsgut Form 0350 application is supported by evidence of twelve months of ownership and use at the India address. We ensure this by preparing the Indian shipping bill and the German import declaration from the same verified inventory — so there is no gap between what India says left and what Germany sees arriving, and the relief application stands up to scrutiny.
How the move runs
- Survey in India. We visit your home in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai or another city, assess the volume and contents, and return a detailed quote with realistic Germany arrival timing.
- Prepare export documentation. Shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code confirmed, packing list and Indian export paperwork prepared and filed before the shipment moves.
- Pack and ship. Our crew packs to export standard and the shipment departs from Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin on the confirmed route.
- Clear in Germany and deliver. ATLAS import clearance and Übersiedlungsgut Form 0350 relief managed with Zoll; road delivery arranged to your home — including unpacking, furniture placement and debris removal.
From a two-bedroom flat in Bengaluru to a five-bedroom family home in Pune, the process is the same and the care is identical. Request your quote and we will build the plan around your India departure date and your Germany arrival date.
Where all the twelve-month figures actually come from
Families reading about this move encounter the number twelve repeatedly and rarely in the same context, so it is worth separating the strands. The relief that lets used household effects enter the EU without duty when someone shifts their normal residence into it comes from the bloc’s duty-relief regulation, which runs alongside the Union Customs Code, and Germany mirrors it for import VAT through its own exemption rules. It sets out four separate conditions, each with its own clock.
- The person must have had their normal residence outside the EU for a continuous period before the transfer — that is the twelve-month figure most often quoted.
- The goods must have been in that person’s possession and, where they are not consumable, actually used at the former residence for a minimum period before they left.
- The goods must be brought in within a defined window after residence in Germany is established, which is why an open-ended plan to ship “the rest of it next year” deserves a check first.
- They must not be sold, lent, hired out or given away for a period after release — a second twelve-month clock, running forwards rather than backwards.
Some categories are excluded outright. Alcohol and tobacco products do not qualify. Nor do articles intended for use in a trade or profession, other than portable instruments of the applied or liberal arts — which is a real consideration for a dentist, a photographer or a musician shipping the tools of their work, and one to raise at the survey rather than at the quay. None of this is something a moving company grants; it is claimed by the person moving, and the mover’s job is to prepare an inventory and a declaration that support the claim honestly. We prepare both from the same verified list precisely so nothing has to be reconciled after the fact.
Getting a container to a German front door
The last two hundred metres are the part of a German delivery that goes wrong, and almost always for reasons visible weeks earlier. A removal vehicle cannot simply park outside: German streets need a temporary no-parking zone arranged with the local authority, with signs standing for several days beforehand so that any cars already there can lawfully be moved. Cities set their own notice periods and none of them work on same-day requests, so the delivery address has to be known well before the truck is loaded.
Older German apartment buildings — the Altbau stock that makes up much of central Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and Leipzig — have narrow staircases, tight landings and lifts that predate the furniture people now own. An external furniture lift running up to a window or balcony is the standard German answer and is booked as a separate item, which is why the survey needs the German address, not just the German city. City centre access adds one more layer: low-emission zones require the delivery vehicle to carry the correct environmental sticker, and a haulier who turns up without one is not getting into central Frankfurt, Stuttgart or Munich.

What travels well, and what should not get on the boat
Five weeks in a steel box crossing the equator twice is a specific kind of stress, and Indian households ship a specific set of things that respond badly to it. Solid wood furniture built in a humid Indian climate moves as it dries out in a German winter, so joints are checked and, where necessary, dismantled rather than trusted. Brass, copper and silver tarnish in a sealed container and travel better wrapped in acid-free tissue than in newspaper. Marble and stone tops crack on their own weight and go in purpose-built crates on edge. Anything wooden used as packaging — crates, cases, pallets, bracing — must be heat-treated and stamped to the international phytosanitary standard before it enters the EU, and an unmarked crate is a problem discovered at Hamburg rather than in Mumbai.
Some things simply cannot travel. Gas cylinders, aerosols, paints, thinners, adhesives, lighter fuel, fireworks and loose lithium batteries are excluded from household consignments, and a crew finding them at the packing stage will remove them. Perishables, opened food and plants are equally out. Where an Indian kitchen has been built in, it is worth knowing that German flats are usually let without a fitted kitchen, so cabinetry sometimes travels — and equally worth knowing that German kitchen dimensions and appliance apertures will not match Indian carcass sizes without work. Large refrigerators and air conditioners specified for Indian ambient temperatures rarely justify their freight cost.

A timeline, counted backwards from the German delivery
Working forwards from today produces optimism. Working backwards from the date the flat has to be usable produces a plan.
| Counting back from delivery | What should be happening |
|---|---|
| 10 to 12 weeks | Survey completed, quote accepted, sailing identified, load port chosen and AD code confirmed against it |
| 8 weeks | Inventory agreed, declared value settled for insurance, decisions made on what stays and what is sold in India |
| 6 to 7 weeks | Packing at the Indian home, export documentation filed, container loaded and moved to the port |
| 4 to 6 weeks | Sea transit — and the point at which the German address, the lease start and the delivery-access questions need answering |
| 1 to 2 weeks | Arrival at Hamburg or Bremerhaven, German import declaration lodged, unpacking at the freight station for a shared container |
| 3 to 5 days | Street permit applied for, furniture lift booked if needed, delivery appointment fixed |
Air freight compresses the middle of that table to days, not the ends — the survey, documentation and access work take the same time whichever mode is used. Where a start date leaves no room, the usual answer on this corridor is a small air consignment now and the sea container behind it, rather than putting an entire household on a plane. If a pet or a vehicle is part of the plan, start considerably earlier and read the pets and vehicles guide first; the waiting periods there run in months. Otherwise, send us the dates and we will work the table backwards with you.
Common questions about this move
Anything specific to your situation? A specialist for this corridor is happy to help.
Contact usHow long does a move to Germany take?
Transit time depends on the freight mode and the volume. Your coordinator gives you a realistic window when quoting — sea freight is slower and more economical, air freight is faster for time-sensitive moves.
Do you handle customs at both ends?
Yes. Export and import documentation is prepared and submitted on your behalf, and clearance is coordinated at both origin and destination.
Is my shipment insured in transit?
Transit insurance is available on every corridor. Your coordinator explains the cover options when quoting so you can choose what suits the shipment.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks is comfortable for most international moves, but we regularly handle urgent relocations. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on dates and freight space.
Will I have one point of contact?
Always — a dedicated coordinator owns your move from first quote to final delivery, including the customs and freight handovers in between.
