Colombia has transformed itself into one of Latin America’s most dynamic economies, with thriving cities, a growing technology and services sector and an expanding role in international trade. The India–Colombia relationship has deepened around IT services, pharmaceuticals, automobiles and energy, and a number of Indian companies now have a presence in Bogotá and Medellín. For Indian professionals, business families and students, Colombia is an increasingly common destination, well supported by both Caribbean and Pacific shipping access.
A move from India to Colombia is a long ocean journey, and Colombia’s coastlines on two seas give the corridor useful routing options. The work is to clear the goods correctly in India, choose the right Colombian port for the destination, and clear cleanly through customs — all run under one team from origin survey to delivery.
The India–Colombia corridor
Export clearance in India begins with the shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code registration with the loading port and export-standard packing. Sea freight departs from Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin and is routed to Cartagena or Barranquilla on the Caribbean coast — the principal gateways for cargo bound for Bogotá and central Colombia — or to Buenaventura on the Pacific, usually via transhipment in Europe, Panama or at a Caribbean hub, with start-to-finish transit typically in the range of 30 to 45 days. Customs clearance is handled by the Dirección de Impuestos y Aduanas Nacionales (DIAN), which administers import duty, IVA value-added tax and the conditions under which used household goods may qualify for relief on a transfer of residence (menaje doméstico).
Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) reaches Colombia through El Dorado International Airport (BOG) in Bogotá, routed via a European, Gulf or North American hub. Air suits urgent or compact consignments; given the distance the cost premium over sea is significant and we explain it honestly.
Indian export clearance
Shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code registration, FEMA-aware documentation and customs clearance at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin — so the shipment leaves India correctly for the ocean crossing.
Caribbean and Pacific ports
Sea routing to Cartagena, Barranquilla or Buenaventura, with the right gateway chosen for your destination.
Colombia customs
Clearance with the DIAN, import duty and IVA confirmed in advance, and menaje doméstico transfer-of-residence relief claimed where eligible.
One coordinator, both ends
The same person manages your India packing survey, ICEGATE export documentation, sea or air dispatch and Colombia delivery — no handover gaps across a long-haul route.
Who moves on this corridor
The India–Colombia route serves several kinds of movers. Households include IT and services professionals, engineering and energy specialists, students, and families joining relatives. Business and office moves arise as Indian firms in IT, pharmaceuticals, automobiles and energy establish a Colombian presence. Commercial freight covers machinery, project cargo and equipment. This single corridor page serves all three; your coordinator tailors documentation and routing to your consignment.
Where we deliver in Colombia
We deliver to Bogotá, the capital and largest city; Medellín, the innovation and business centre; Cali in the south-west; the Caribbean cities of Barranquilla and Cartagena; and other centres including Bucaramanga, Pereira, Manizales and Santa Marta. Bogotá and Medellín handle most moves; for other destinations we arrange onward delivery as part of your quote.
How your move works
- India-side survey. We assess volume and contents at your home or office in India — in person or by video — and return a clear quote with sea and air options and realistic Colombia arrival windows.
- Export documentation. Indian export paperwork is prepared: shipping bill filed through ICEGATE, AD code confirmed, packing list, invoice and any FEMA-related declarations.
- Pack and dispatch. Our crew packs to export standard from your India origin, and the shipment is booked and dispatched to Cartagena, Barranquilla or Buenaventura, or by air to Bogotá.
- Clear and deliver in Colombia. We manage import clearance with the DIAN, advise on menaje doméstico relief, and coordinate road delivery to your address.

Cartagena or Buenaventura: which coast, and why it matters
Colombia is the only country in South America with ports on both the Caribbean and the Pacific, and for a shipment from India that is a real choice rather than a curiosity. The two coasts are served by different shipping networks, and each sits on the opposite side of the Andes from the other. The wrong choice does not lose the shipment; it adds a week of road and a long climb.
From India, cargo bound for the Caribbean coast generally goes west: transhipment at a Gulf hub or Colombo, through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean, then across the Atlantic to Cartagena — itself a major transhipment hub for the region — or Barranquilla. Cargo for the Pacific coast goes east instead, through Singapore or Port Klang onto a trans-Pacific service that reaches Buenaventura via Central America or Callao. Neither is short. Cartagena tends to have more frequent connections and a better-run terminal; Buenaventura is closer to Cali and the south-west but has a reputation for congestion and slower clearance.
| Destination | Port we usually recommend | Road leg |
|---|---|---|
| Bogotá | Cartagena | Around a thousand kilometres up the Magdalena valley and into the Eastern Cordillera; two to three days for a container truck |
| Medellín | Cartagena | Shorter than Bogotá’s, ending with the descent into the Aburrá valley |
| Cali and the south-west | Buenaventura | A short but steep climb over the Western Cordillera; a day’s drive |
| Barranquilla, Cartagena, Santa Marta | Cartagena or Barranquilla | Local delivery from the port |
| Bucaramanga, Pereira, Manizales | Cartagena | Long inland legs through mountain roads; delivery windows widened accordingly |
Where the numbers are close, we look at the sailing schedule in the week you want to pack and choose the coast that connects best. For most Bogotá and Medellín moves from India that is Cartagena.

Delivering into Bogotá at 2,600 metres
Bogotá sits on a high plateau, roughly 2,600 metres above sea level, and a container that left Cartagena at sea level arrives there having climbed the whole way. A few things follow from that which are worth knowing before the truck arrives.
Sealed and pressurised items behave differently at altitude. Aerosols, sealed jars, some packaged foods and certain inflatable items expand; we have opened cartons to find puffed-up snack packets and weeping toiletry bottles. Nothing dangerous, but it is why our packers bag toiletries separately and why we suggest leaving aerosols behind. Electronics and furniture are unaffected. The crew, on the other hand, is affected: unloading a container on the third floor of a building in Chapinero at that altitude is slower than at sea level, and we staff the delivery accordingly rather than rushing it.
Then there is the city itself. Most families arriving from India settle in the north — Chicó, Rosales, Usaquén, Santa Bárbara — or in the residential conjuntos of Chía and Cajicá on the savanna to the north. These are gated developments with an administración that governs deliveries: a booking, a copy of the crew’s identification, a time window, often a limit on truck size that means the container is unloaded onto a smaller vehicle at a depot first. Bogotá also restricts heavy-vehicle movements on certain roads at certain hours, so container trucks do not simply drive to the door. Our Colombian partner arranges the transfer, the building booking and the timing before the box leaves Cartagena.
Medellín has its own version: a valley city with steep neighbourhoods like El Poblado and Envigado where street access can be tight, but a milder climate and a rather more relaxed pace. Cali is flatter, hotter and closer to its port.
DIAN, menaje doméstico and the paper trail
Every household import into Colombia is filed with the DIAN by a licensed customs agency (agencia de aduanas), and the agency’s fee sits inside our quote. The agency needs a Spanish-language inventory with values, the bill of lading, and an identity number issued in Colombia for the consignee. Relief on used household goods under the menaje doméstico provision depends on the goods being used, arriving within the period the DIAN allows around the consignee’s own arrival, and the consignee holding the residence documentation the DIAN specifies. We are a relocation partner, not an immigration adviser; our job is to tell you what the customs agency will ask for and to time the sailing so the shipment does not arrive before the papers do.

Colombian ports have another layer that people from India are not always expecting: anti-narcotics inspection. Containers are routinely selected for physical examination by the police as well as by customs, on arrival as well as departure. It is not a reflection on you or your shipment; it is simply how the ports work, and it adds a day or two when it happens. A well-packed, well-inventoried container is examined faster.
Restricted and regulated items, as a matter of customs fact: plants, seeds, soil and animal products need authorisation from the agricultural authority, ICA, and are best left behind; foodstuffs and medicines fall under INVIMA and are admitted in household quantities only if commercially packaged and labelled; used tyres, firearms and certain electronic equipment are prohibited or licensed. Duty and IVA are assessed on anything outside the relief — new items in packaging, commercial quantities, and goods the DIAN considers not to be household effects.
How the quote is built
A Colombia quote from us has more lines than most, because the corridor has more legs. Reading it top to bottom you will see the Indian origin work — survey, export packing, materials, the shipping bill on ICEGATE and AD code handling, haulage to Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin — then the ocean freight to the chosen coast, the transhipment and destination port charges, the customs agency and DIAN filing, any inspection or storage days, the inland haulage to your city with the transfer to a smaller vehicle where the building requires it, and finally delivery, unpacking, furniture assembly and debris removal. Insurance is a separate line so you can see what it covers.
What moves the total: volume first, then the coast and city, then whether the shipment is a sole-use container or groupage. Groupage to Colombia from India does exist, but it waits for volume and is not a weekly departure, so for a small household we will usually show you an air option beside it. Seasons matter less here than on some corridors — Colombia has no monsoon, though its two rainy periods around April and October can slow the mountain roads — but the Indian monsoon from June to September affects the packing end, and the weeks around Christmas are crowded at Cartagena.
If the container lands before your home is ready — common when a lease starts on the first of the month and the vessel does not care — short-term storage in a bonded warehouse at Cartagena or a domestic depot in Bogotá is priced as its own line, per week, so you can see what a fortnight’s delay costs before deciding whether to hold the shipment or take delivery into a temporary flat. Holding at the port is usually cheaper than trucking it inland twice.
Questions on the India–Colombia corridor
How long does the whole move take?
From packing in India to delivery in Bogotá, plan on eight to ten weeks for a sea move via Cartagena, with the range coming mainly from the transhipment connection and the DIAN filing. Air freight to Bogotá via a European or North American hub typically arrives within two weeks.
Can I ship a car?
Colombia’s rules on importing used vehicles are restrictive, and it is rarely practical for a household arriving from India. It is worth a conversation before you decide, but go in expecting the answer to be no.
Do you deliver to the coffee region?
Yes — Pereira, Manizales and Armenia are all reached from Cartagena or Buenaventura by mountain road. The inland leg is long and we widen the delivery window to match.
What about Indian groceries?
Sealed, labelled, commercially packaged dry goods in household quantities are usually admitted subject to INVIMA rules; home-prepared foods, pickles in unlabelled jars and anything perishable will be removed. Bogotá and Medellín both have small Indian grocery suppliers, which is often the better answer.
