Cameroon, often described as “Africa in miniature” for its range of climates and landscapes, is one of Central Africa’s largest economies and a regional gateway to the landlocked countries of the interior. The India–Cameroon relationship is grounded in trade, pharmaceuticals, agricultural machinery and a long-standing Indian business presence in Douala and Yaoundé. For Indians relocating for work, business or family, Cameroon is a well-connected destination with its own deep-sea ports — making the corridor more direct than for the region’s landlocked nations.

A move to Cameroon hinges on getting the India end right and routing the goods cleanly into the country’s Atlantic ports. Because Cameroon also serves as a transit gateway for Chad and the Central African Republic, its ports are busy and its customs procedures detailed. Seemleius coordinates the full chain under one team.

The India–Cameroon corridor

Export clearance in India begins with the shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code registration with the loading port and export-standard packing. Sea freight departs from Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin and is routed to the Port of Douala — Cameroon’s principal commercial port — or the newer deep-water Port of Kribi, usually via transhipment in Europe or at a West African hub, with start-to-finish transit typically in the range of 28 to 40 days. Customs clearance is handled by the Cameroon Customs administration (Direction Générale des Douanes), which administers import duty, VAT and the conditions under which used personal effects may qualify for transfer-of-residence relief. A pre-shipment inspection or BESC/electronic cargo tracking note is generally required, and we prepare this in advance.

Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) reaches Cameroon through Douala International Airport (DLA) or Yaoundé Nsimalen International Airport (NSI), routed via Addis Ababa, Casablanca or a Gulf hub. Air suits urgent or compact consignments; we explain the cost premium over sea honestly.

One coordinator, both ends

The same person manages your India packing survey, ICEGATE export documentation, sea or air dispatch and Cameroon delivery — no handover gaps.

Who moves on this corridor

The India–Cameroon route serves several kinds of movers. Households include professionals in healthcare, education, energy and trade, and families joining relatives in Douala or Yaoundé. Business and office moves arise as Indian firms in pharmaceuticals, agricultural machinery, manufacturing and services establish or expand operations. Commercial freight covers equipment, project cargo and supplies. This single corridor page serves all three; your coordinator tailors documentation and routing to your consignment.

Where we deliver in Cameroon

We deliver to Douala, the economic capital and largest city; Yaoundé, the political capital; and other centres including Bafoussam, Bamenda, Garoua, Maroua, Ngaoundéré and Limbe. Douala and Yaoundé handle most moves; for other destinations we arrange onward road delivery as part of your quote.

How your move works

  1. India-side survey. We assess volume and contents at your home or office in India — in person or by video — and return a clear quote with sea and air options and realistic Cameroon arrival windows.
  2. Export documentation. Indian export paperwork is prepared: shipping bill filed through ICEGATE, AD code confirmed, packing list, invoice and any FEMA-related declarations.
  3. Pack and dispatch. Our crew packs to export standard from your India origin, and the shipment is booked and dispatched to Douala or Kribi, or by air to Cameroon.
  4. Clear and deliver in Cameroon. We manage import clearance with Cameroon Customs, advise on transfer-of-residence relief, and coordinate onward road delivery to your address.

Douala, described honestly

The Port of Douala handles most of Cameroon’s container traffic and most of the transit trade for Chad and the Central African Republic besides, and it does so from a river estuary with a shallow, silting channel that limits vessel size and needs constant dredging. The result is a port that runs close to capacity for much of the year. Containers wait for berths, wait for yard space, and wait for customs. Dwell time — the number of days a box sits in the port before it leaves — is the figure we watch on this corridor more than any other, and it varies from month to month in ways that nobody can promise away.

None of that makes Douala the wrong choice. It is the port nearest the two cities where most Indian households in Cameroon live, it has the deepest pool of experienced clearing agents in the country, and its road links to Yaoundé and the west are the best in Cameroon. It just means the plan has to be built around the port’s realities rather than a brochure’s. Two things do the most to keep a Douala box moving: having every document validated before the vessel berths, and having the clearing agent physically present and pushing the file on the day it lands. We arrange both.

Kribi, the alternative

About 150 kilometres south of Douala, the Port of Kribi is the deep-water port Cameroon built to relieve the estuary. It opened to container traffic in 2018, its draught takes ships Douala cannot, and its yard is not yet crowded. For the right shipment it is a genuine option: a box that lands at Kribi can clear faster and cleaner than one queuing at Douala.

The honest caveats. Fewer lines call at Kribi from the Indian trade, and some that do use it as a transhipment point rather than a final destination, so your box may land at Kribi only to be moved to Douala anyway. The road from Kribi to Douala and on to Yaoundé is good but adds a leg and a cost. And the clearing-agent pool at Kribi is smaller. In practice we look at Kribi when a Kribi-calling service lines up with your packing date and your destination is Douala, Yaoundé or the south, and we tell you plainly when a Douala routing is the shorter wait despite the congestion. It is a case-by-case call, not a rule.

The BESC and the paper trail

Cameroon requires an electronic cargo tracking note — the Bordereau Électronique de Suivi des Cargaisons, usually shortened to BESC — for every consignment arriving by sea. It is issued against the bill of lading and the commercial and packing documents, it must be validated before the vessel arrives, and a container that arrives without a validated BESC is penalised and held. This is not a formality to leave to the last week. We open the BESC file as soon as the bill of lading is drafted and validate it while the vessel is at sea.

The rest of the paper trail runs in two languages and two systems. In India: the shipping bill on ICEGATE, AD code registration, packing list and invoice, and export clearance at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin. In Cameroon: the import declaration in the customs system, the BESC, an inventory in French, valuation where duty applies, and, for a household moving to Cameroon, the file supporting relief on used personal effects. That relief is real and worth claiming; the Direction Générale des Douanes sets conditions on ownership period, arrival timing and residence documentation, and the precise list changes. Your coordinator gives you the current list for your case. We are a relocation partner, not an immigration adviser.

One more document worth knowing about: an attestation of value or a pre-shipment inspection certificate may be required depending on the nature and value of the goods. Used household effects usually fall outside it; commercial cargo usually falls inside. We tell you which applies before you pack.

What drives the cost, and what drives the delay

Ocean freight to Douala from India is a transhipment route, most commonly through a European hub or a West African port such as Tema or Lomé. The freight line is what it is. Where Cameroon quotes differ from a Gulf or Southeast Asia quote is in what happens after the ship arrives.

  • Port dwell and demurrage. Free time at Douala is short and storage and demurrage accrue daily. A box that clears in the first week costs a fraction of one that clears in the third. This is the largest variable on the corridor, and the one our documentation discipline exists to control.
  • The BESC. A fee, and a deadline. Both are in the quote.
  • Inland delivery. Douala to Yaoundé is a good road of around 250 kilometres; Bafoussam and the west are similar. Garoua and Maroua in the far north are a long haul and quoted individually. Delivery into the North-West and South-West regions — Bamenda, Buea, Limbe — is scheduled around conditions on the ground and confirmed case by case; we do not pretend otherwise.
  • Season. Douala is one of the wettest large cities in Africa, with rains from roughly March to November peaking in August and September. Packing at origin in the Indian monsoon and unpacking in Douala in August is the humid case; we pack for it.
  • Air freight. Into Douala or Yaoundé Nsimalen via Addis Ababa, Casablanca, Paris or Istanbul. For a compact consignment or the first-month essentials it removes the port wait entirely, and on this corridor that is worth more than usual. Many households ship a small air lot and a sea container.

A realistic timeline, Douala included

The figure in the corridor description above — 28 to 40 days — is the sea transit. The whole move is longer, and the honest version runs like this.

  • Survey to packing: two to three weeks. Quote, decisions on groupage versus a full container, the sea-and-air split if you want one, and a packing date. The BESC and the Cameroon import file are opened now, not later.
  • Packing to sailing: one to two weeks. A day or two of packing, the truck to Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin, export clearance on ICEGATE, and a wait for the booked vessel.
  • Sea: four to six weeks. Main line to the transhipment hub and a second vessel to Douala or Kribi. The BESC is validated while the box is on the water.
  • Port and clearance: days to weeks. This is the stretch nobody can promise. With the file complete and the agent on the quay, boxes have cleared within the free-time window; with a document missing, they have not. We plan for the first and tell you if the second is developing.
  • Delivery: a day or two. Douala the same day the container is released; Yaoundé the next; Bafoussam and the west a day or two beyond that; the far north by arrangement.

Put together, plan on eight to twelve weeks from confirming the booking to your goods in the house in Douala or Yaoundé, with the port stage as the swing factor. Book earlier if your start date is fixed; an air consignment for the essentials takes the pressure off the container’s date and is common on this corridor for exactly that reason.

A long-standing Indian presence

Unlike some of its neighbours, Cameroon has an Indian community of real standing, concentrated in Douala with a smaller presence in Yaoundé — trading families, pharmaceutical distributors, agricultural machinery dealers and, more recently, professionals in healthcare, energy and education. It is not large by Gulf or East African standards, but there are Indian grocers, restaurants and a community network in Douala, and new arrivals usually find their feet quickly. That makes the household side of a Cameroon move easier than the freight side, which is the reverse of most corridors.

Questions on the Cameroon corridor

How long will my container sit in Douala?

We will not give you a number, because any number would be a guess dressed up as a fact. With a validated BESC, complete documents and an agent on the quay, boxes clear in days; without them, weeks. We control the first case and warn you about the second.

Should I ask for Kribi?

Ask us to check it. If a Kribi-calling service fits your dates and destination, we will recommend it; if not, Douala done properly is still a good route.

Is groupage available to Cameroon?

Yes, through some European consolidators, with the usual wait for the shared box to fill. For a full household a 20-foot container is the more common answer, and it is easier to clear as a single file at Douala.
