Cabo Verde is an archipelago of ten volcanic islands in the central Atlantic, around 600 kilometres off the West African coast. Stable and increasingly prosperous, it draws a steady stream of movers from India — hospitality staff, renewable-energy and infrastructure specialists, and individuals relocating for lifestyle and investment. Moving household goods from India to an Atlantic island nation is an exercise in patient logistics, and Seemleius is built to handle it.
Because Cabo Verde sits off the major east–west shipping lanes, almost every shipment from India reaches it by transhipment rather than on a direct service. The work is to clear the goods correctly in India, route them through a European or West African hub, and arrange the final island leg — including inter-island shipping where the destination is not the main island of Santiago.
The India–Cabo Verde corridor
Export clearance in India starts with the shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code registration with the loading port and export-standard packing. Sea freight departs from Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin and is routed via a transhipment hub — commonly a European port or Dakar — before the final leg to Porto Grande in Mindelo on São Vicente, or to the port serving Praia on Santiago. Start-to-finish sea transit is typically in the range of 30 to 45 days depending on hub connections and sailing schedules. Customs clearance is handled by the Direcção Nacional das Receitas do Estado, which administers import duty, VAT and the relief conditions for used personal effects under transfer-of-residence rules.
Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) reaches Cabo Verde through Amílcar Cabral International Airport (SID) on Sal or Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI) at Praia, routed via Lisbon or a Gulf hub. Air suits urgent or compact consignments; we explain the cost premium over sea honestly so you can choose with full information.
Indian export clearance
Shipping bill filed on ICEGATE, AD code registration, FEMA-aware documentation and customs clearance at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin — so your goods leave India correctly for the Atlantic crossing.
Transhipment routing
Shipments route via a European port or Dakar before the final leg to Mindelo or Praia — we manage the hub connection and the schedule.
Cabo Verde customs
Clearance with the Direcção Nacional das Receitas do Estado, duty and VAT confirmed in advance, and transfer-of-residence relief claimed where eligible.
Inter-island delivery
Where your destination is not the port of entry, we arrange the onward inter-island shipping leg to Sal, Boa Vista, Fogo or wherever your home is.
Who moves on this corridor
The India–Cabo Verde route serves several kinds of movers. Households include hospitality and tourism professionals, renewable-energy and construction specialists, and individuals relocating for lifestyle, retirement or investment. Business and office moves arise as Indian firms in tourism services, energy and trade establish a footing in the islands. Commercial freight covers project equipment, hotel fit-out cargo and supplies. This single corridor page serves all three; your coordinator tailors documentation and routing to your consignment.
Where we deliver in Cabo Verde
We deliver to Praia, the capital and largest city on Santiago; Mindelo, the cultural and port city on São Vicente; the tourism centres of Espargos and Santa Maria on Sal; Sal Rei on Boa Vista; and the towns of Fogo, Santo Antão and the other inhabited islands. Praia and Mindelo handle most moves; for the smaller islands we arrange the inter-island leg as part of your quote.
How your move works
- India-side survey. We assess volume and contents at your home or office in India — in person or by video — and return a clear quote with sea and air options and realistic island arrival windows.
- Export documentation. Indian export paperwork is prepared: shipping bill filed through ICEGATE, AD code confirmed, packing list, invoice and any FEMA-related declarations.
- Pack and dispatch. Our crew packs to export standard from your India origin, and the shipment is booked and dispatched via the transhipment hub to Mindelo or Praia.
- Clear and deliver in Cabo Verde. We manage import clearance, advise on transfer-of-residence relief, and coordinate final delivery — including any inter-island leg — to your address.
To start a move from India to Cabo Verde, request a quote and your coordinator will walk you through the documentation, routing and timeline.
The hub decides your timeline
A container leaving Nhava Sheva for Cabo Verde does not sail to Cabo Verde. It sails to a hub — most often Las Palmas de Gran Canaria or Lisbon, sometimes another Iberian Atlantic port, occasionally Dakar — and waits there for a feeder vessel that calls at Praia or at Porto Grande in Mindelo. The main-line leg from India to the hub is a routine deep-sea voyage. The feeder leg is where Cabo Verde becomes Cabo Verde: the islands are a small market served by small ships on schedules that can be weekly, fortnightly or less, and a box that misses one sailing waits for the next.
That waiting is the thing to understand. It is not a failure of planning; it is what serving a small archipelago looks like. Feeder operators consolidate cargo for the islands at the hub, and a household container is one box among a mixed load of building materials, supermarket stock and hotel supplies. When the feeder is full or the schedule slips, your container sits at Las Palmas or Lisbon until the next call. We say 30 to 45 days for the whole sea transit because that is what it usually is; we also say plainly that the hub connection can push it further, and that we cannot buy our way out of a missed feeder.
What we can do is choose the hub well. Las Palmas is closest and its feeders to Mindelo and Praia run frequently; Lisbon has long-standing Cabo Verde services and the Portuguese-language paperwork is second nature there; a Dakar routing occasionally makes sense from Chennai or Cochin depending on the line. Your coordinator books the combination that gives the shortest expected wait at the hub, and then tracks the box through it.

Your own box, or a share of one
Because of the hub wait, the choice between a full container and groupage matters more here than on most corridors.
Groupage — your goods consolidated with others’ in a shared container — is available to Cabo Verde, mostly through Lisbon, where trade with the islands is long established. It is the sensible option for a modest household or a single professional’s effects, and it costs less. The trade is time: the consolidator waits until the shared box is full before it moves, and then the box waits for the feeder. Two waits, not one.
A full 20-foot container of your own removes the first wait. The box leaves India when it is packed, not when a consolidator is ready. You pay for the container whether it is full or not, and for many Cabo Verde households it is not; but if your start date is fixed and the volume is anywhere near half a box, it is often the right call. We quote both and show you the difference, including the hub-wait assumption behind each.
The Indian community in Cabo Verde, it should be said, is small and mostly individual: hospitality managers on Sal and Boa Vista, engineers on wind, water and port projects, a few traders and restaurateurs. There is no established diaspora infrastructure to lean on, and the informal shipping arrangements that rely on a community network elsewhere do not exist here. Plan as though you are the first person to make this move, because in your building you may well be.
Landing on the islands
Where your container arrives depends on where you are going, and the two ports are on different islands.
- Porto da Praia, Santiago. The capital’s port, and the entry point for anyone settling in Praia, Cidade Velha, Assomada or elsewhere on Santiago. Customs clearance through the Direcção Nacional das Receitas do Estado happens here, and delivery is by truck across an island with steep, narrow streets in the older districts; we check access before the delivery day.
- Porto Grande, Mindelo, São Vicente. The larger deep-water harbour and the historic port of the islands. If your home is in Mindelo, the box is cleared and delivered on the same island. If it is on neighbouring Santo Antão, the goods cross by the short ferry from Mindelo to Porto Novo.
- Sal and Boa Vista. The tourism islands. Goods reach Sal through Porto de Palmeira and Boa Vista through Sal Rei, either on a direct feeder call or on the domestic inter-island service after clearing at Praia or Mindelo. This adds an inter-island leg and some days; we build it into the quote rather than surprise you with it.
- Fogo, Maio, Brava and the rest. Served by the inter-island cargo and ferry network from Praia. Feasible, slower, quoted individually.
Once on the right island, delivery is unremarkable in a good way: a truck, a crew, unpacking to the room, debris taken away. If your home is not ready, short-term storage on Santiago or São Vicente can be arranged; on the smaller islands storage capacity is limited and it is better to time arrival to the house.

How the quote is built
A Cabo Verde quote has more moving parts than most, so it helps to know what is in it. The survey gives us a volume in cubic metres and an inventory, and that inventory is translated into Portuguese for customs at the islands; the translation is a line in the quote and worth every escudo, because an inventory the customs officer can read is an inventory that clears. From the volume we price the two routings side by side — groupage through Lisbon, and a 20-foot container of your own through Las Palmas or Lisbon — each with its own transit assumption and its own hub-wait risk stated in words rather than buried in a footnote.
Origin charges cover the packing crew, materials, the truck to Nhava Sheva, Cochin or Chennai and Indian export clearance; they scale with how much fragile and furniture volume there is, not with how far away Cabo Verde is. Ocean freight and hub handling are the line’s charges plus the feeder. At the destination end sit port handling at Praia or Mindelo, customs clearance, any inter-island leg, and delivery, which we price after asking about the street, the stairs and whether a truck can actually get to the door. Duty and VAT are shown separately where relief on used household goods does not apply. The quote is for the whole job from your door to your new one; we move households and offices, nothing smaller.
Two more things the survey asks about. Salt air: the islands are windy and marine, and steel and electronics corrode faster than they do inland in India, so anything with an exposed metal surface is wrapped accordingly. And voltage: Cabo Verde runs on 220 volts, so your Indian appliances will work, which makes the decision about what to bring simpler than it is for a move to the Americas.
Timing it right
Cabo Verde has a dry climate with a short rainy season from around August to October, and it rarely disrupts port work. What does is the Atlantic winter. From December to March, swell can close the smaller island ports for days at a time and delay feeder calls at Praia and Mindelo; a shipment landing in the islands in January carries more schedule risk than one landing in May. The Indian monsoon, June to September, is the other weather factor, and it lands at the origin end: packing day in Mumbai or Kochi in July needs cover from the door to the truck, and the container should be sealed dry.
Booking windows are longer here than on a Gulf or Singapore corridor. Give us ten to twelve weeks before your intended arrival if you can. That allows the survey, the packing date, the Indian export clearance, the main-line sailing, the hub wait and the feeder, with some slack. Eight weeks is workable; six is possible with an air consignment carrying the essentials, and your coordinator will tell you honestly whether the sea container can meet your date or whether you should plan to live without it for a few weeks.
Cabo Verde questions
Why not fly everything?
For a compact consignment you can, via Lisbon to Praia or Sal, and it removes the hub wait entirely. For a full household the air cost is hard to justify; the usual answer is a small air shipment for essentials and the rest by sea.
Which Indian port should I ship from?
Whichever is nearest your home, in most cases. Nhava Sheva has the widest choice of Europe-bound services and therefore the most hub options; Cochin and Chennai are fine and sometimes route via Colombo to join a main-line vessel. The difference at the Cabo Verde end is negligible.
Does customs relief on used household goods apply?
Cabo Verde does provide for relief on used personal effects on a transfer of residence, subject to conditions on ownership, arrival timing and residence documentation. We confirm the current terms and prepare the file. We are a relocation partner, not an immigration adviser.
Can you deliver to a hotel staff residence?
Yes. Many hospitality moves deliver to employer housing on Sal or Boa Vista. We coordinate with the property’s management for access and timing.
