Relocation & freight corridor

Moving to Sweden

India to Sweden runs on sea and air freight into an EU port, with cold-climate packing built in — Seemleius moves Indian professionals, students and families along this corridor.

  • 20+ years moving households & cargo
  • 184 countries destination corridors covered
  • In-house customs clearance filed by our own team
  • One coordinator from quote to delivery

The India–Sweden corridor carries a specific profile. Swedish technology companies recruit from Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. Swedish universities draw graduate and doctoral students from across India. Engineering multinationals headquartered in Gothenburg — Volvo, AB Volvo, SKF — bring Indian professionals with them. Ericsson, IKEA and the cluster of Stockholm-based scale-ups that grew out of Skype and Spotify continue to hire Indian engineers in volume. And a steadily growing number of Indian families are choosing Sweden — for education, for quality of life, for a different pace. Each of these move types lands on the same freight corridor: sea or air from Indian gateway ports and airports into Sweden, with EU customs clearance at the destination and cold-climate realities at the delivery end.

This page explains how the corridor works from the India side. Choose the guide below that matches your move, or request a quote and we will take it from there.

What makes this corridor distinctive from the Indian end

Moving from India means the export side is as important as the import side. Personal effects and household goods leaving India require a properly filed Shipping Bill on the ICEGATE electronic gateway and an export declaration submitted to Indian customs. The originating party needs a registered Authorised Dealer (AD) code with the gateway port through their banker, and for emigrating individuals and families the documentation should reflect the relevant FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act) emigration-status context correctly. Commercial exporters need a valid GST LUT (Letter of Undertaking) for zero-rated exports, and may claim drawback or RoDTEP benefits where applicable. We prepare the Indian export file as part of every move on this corridor — it is not something the moving person or company has to sort out separately.

The route: India to Sweden

Sea freight from India

Containerised from Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin — typically twenty-five to thirty days to Gothenburg, often transhipped via Hamburg or Antwerp.

Air freight from India

BOM, DEL, BLR or MAA to Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) on Air India direct or SAS via Frankfurt and Copenhagen — nine to ten hours of flying time for time-sensitive shipments.

Indian export clearance

Shipping Bill via ICEGATE, AD code reconciliation, FEMA-consistent documentation and GST LUT where applicable, prepared at the Indian gateway before the consignment departs.

Swedish Tullverket clearance

Swedish customs runs TDS electronic clearance; EORI registration is required for commercial cargo. Qualifying households claim Flyttgods transfer-of-residence relief via Form Tv 740.20.

Swedish customs — what arrives at the other end

Sweden is an EU member state, which keeps it inside the single market for goods once they have cleared. Swedish customs is administered by Tullverket through the TDS electronic clearance system. The standard Swedish VAT (MOMS) rate of twenty-five per cent is one of the highest in the EU and applies to commercial imports along with any duty. For households moving permanently, Flyttgods — transfer-of-residence relief filed on Form Tv 740.20 — allows personal effects owned and used for at least six months before the move to enter free of duty and MOMS, provided the household is establishing genuine residence in Sweden. We prepare the Flyttgods file at the Indian end so the household does not arrive in Sweden with paperwork still to gather.

Personnummer — the keystone for life in Sweden

Almost every administrative task in Sweden depends on the personnummer, the ten-digit personal identity number issued by Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency). It is the gateway to a Swedish bank account, BankID digital identity, a mobile phone contract, a permanent residential lease, healthcare registration and the school enrolment process. Issuance can take several weeks from arrival, and there is no shortcut. Households on this corridor generally begin the Skatteverket process in their first week in the country, and it is worth reading up on before departure rather than discovering it in the second week — the registration itself belongs to the household, and sits outside the scope of a freight and moving service.

Cold climate at the destination end

Most moves from India to Sweden are from warm-climate origins to cold-climate destinations. That temperature differential is not just a comfort question — it affects how goods are packed, how they travel, and what happens when a container or carton is opened in a Swedish winter. Electronics, wooden furniture and moisture-sensitive items all need specific consideration. Households also need to think practically about winter clothing: the wardrobe that worked in Mumbai or Chennai will not survive a Stockholm February, and parkas, insulated boots and base layers are best bought in Sweden where the sizing and ratings reflect the climate. We account for Sweden’s climate in how we pack at the India end, so what arrives reflects what was shipped.

How the move unfolds

  1. Survey in India. We assess your household or cargo at your Indian origin city — Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune or Kochi — and recommend the right freight mode (sea, air, or a split shipment) for your dates and what you are moving.
  2. Prepare Indian export documents. Shipping Bill via ICEGATE, AD code reconciliation, FEMA-consistent paperwork or GST LUT (for commercial cargo) are prepared before anything is packed.
  3. Pack with climate in mind. Packing materials and methods are chosen for the full India–Sweden journey, including the cold-climate delivery conditions in Sweden.
  4. Clear and deliver in Sweden. Tullverket clearance — including Flyttgods documentation where applicable — is managed; we deliver and unpack at your Swedish address in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Uppsala or Lund.

Why a Sweden-bound container from India usually changes ship on the way

It is worth being straightforward about the routing, because a quoted transit figure misleads if the structure behind it is not explained. Very few deep-sea services from Indian ports call at a Swedish quay directly. The mainline sailing out of Nhava Sheva, Mundra or Chennai runs west through the Suez Canal and terminates at a North Sea hub — Rotterdam, Hamburg, Bremerhaven or Antwerp. The box is discharged there and lifted onto a North Sea and Baltic feeder that carries it into Gothenburg. That second leg is short in sea miles, but it introduces a wait, because feeders run to a weekly or twice-weekly pattern and a container that misses its connection sits on the hub quay until the next one sails.

So when a schedule quotes twenty-five to thirty days, that is the mainline leg. The hub dwell, the feeder and the road leg from Gothenburg to the delivery address sit on top of it. Planning to the mainline figure alone is the commonest reason a household feels a Sweden move has slipped when in fact it is running normally. Ask for the whole chain to be spelled out, and for the mainline and the feeder to be named separately, so the date being planned around is the date on the doorstep rather than the date on the water.

Entry point What it handles Where it makes sense on this lane
Gothenburg (Göteborg) By a wide margin Sweden’s largest container port, and the country’s only port with regular deep-sea and heavy feeder connectivity The default discharge port for almost everything arriving from India, wherever in Sweden it is finally going
Helsingborg Second container port, strong southern Swedish hinterland Skåne deliveries and Malmö–Lund traffic where a Gothenburg feeder slot is tight
Stockholm Norvik, Nynäshamn Deep-water container terminal serving the capital region and the Mälardalen Stockholm-area cargo where the road leg from Gothenburg is the expensive part
Copenhagen Malmö Port Ro-ro, vehicles and out-of-gauge project pieces Cars, machinery and anything that rolls rather than stacks
Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) The principal Swedish air cargo gateway Air consignments out of BOM, DEL, BLR, MAA and COK
Landvetter (GOT) and Malmö (MMX) Thinner freighter capacity; much of their volume arrives by road from Frankfurt or Copenhagen West and south Swedish air deliveries where the trucked leg is acceptable

Because the discharge often happens in a Dutch or German port, there is a genuine choice about where the goods enter free circulation. Cargo can travel from the hub to Sweden under a T1 transit declaration and clear with Tullverket, or it can clear in the Netherlands or Germany and complete the journey as EU goods. Which is better depends on who the consignee is, whether they are registered for Swedish VAT and whether the shipment is a household consignment or commercial stock — but it is a decision, not an accident, and it should be made before the vessel sails.

The Swedish calendar decides more of this than people expect

Sweden takes its holidays seriously and does so all at once. Much of industry closes for the industrisemester across roughly weeks twenty-eight to thirty-one, when a large share of the workforce is on statutory leave. The ports keep working, but consignees, building caretakers, lift technicians and receiving docks thin out dramatically, and a July delivery date can be agreed in April and then quietly become impossible. Midsummer, in the second half of June, is a real national stop rather than a nominal one. The stretch from a few days before Christmas to Epiphany is similarly quiet.

Winter is a different kind of constraint. Around the solstice, Stockholm gets under six and a half hours between sunrise and sunset, and Gothenburg is not much better; further north the day is shorter still. A container is unloaded and carried into a building in daylight if there is any choice about it, because grit, ice and a dark stairwell make a long carry slower and less safe. Delivery crews on this corridor therefore work to shorter usable windows in December and January than they do in June, and a schedule that assumes a summer-length working day will overrun. The most comfortable arrival windows are April to mid-June and late August to the end of October.

What a Swedish address actually asks of a delivery crew

The Swedish housing stock is a specific delivery problem, and the difference between a smooth day and a bad one is usually decided in advance rather than on the day.

  • The portkod. Almost every apartment building has a keypad on the street door, often with a second code for the goods entrance or the basement. Both codes need to be in the crew’s hands before they arrive, not fetched by telephone from someone at work.
  • The lift, if there is one. Buildings from the 1900s to the 1930s frequently have no lift at all, or a cage lift with room for three people and nothing that resembles a sofa. Where a lift exists, in a rented block or a bostadsrättsförening, it usually has to be booked and padded with the caretaker beforehand.
  • Hoisting. Lifting a large item in through a window or balcony is a normal, well-established Swedish solution rather than an exotic one, but it needs the housing association’s agreement and a scheduled slot.
  • The kerb. Many inner-city streets have no loading bay. Where the vehicle must stand on the carriageway, the space is reserved with the municipality in advance, and in central Stockholm the city charges for it.
  • The trailer question. Plenty of Swedish residential streets simply cannot take a forty-foot trailer. The container is then stripped at a depot and shuttled in on a smaller vehicle, which is an extra handling step and belongs in the plan and the quote from the start.
  • Salt and grit. In winter everything that comes off the pavement comes into the flat with it. Floor protection through the stairwell and the hallway is not optional between November and March.

Where the people on this corridor actually land

The traffic is not evenly spread across the country. Greater Stockholm takes the largest share, with the telecoms and software cluster at Kista and the surrounding Solna and Sundbyberg addresses, and Uppsala an hour north on the life-sciences side. Gothenburg is the automotive and engineering centre, with Lindholmen and Mölndal drawing most of the incoming households. Malmö and Lund work as one labour market across the Øresund, with a heavy concentration of pharmaceutical and research employment and, at Lund, the large research facilities that have pulled in international scientists for a decade. Linköping is smaller but disproportionately important on this lane, with aerospace and defence engineering alongside a strong technical university. Västerås and Södertälje round it out on the industrial automation and heavy manufacturing side.

Questions people ask before booking this corridor

How long does it really take, door to door?

For a sea consignment, plan on the mainline transit plus the hub and feeder connection plus Swedish clearance and the final road leg. Six to eight weeks from the Indian survey to a Swedish doorstep is a realistic planning assumption for a full household, and less if the paperwork is ready early and the sailing is a good one.

Can we simply send everything by air instead?

Air is the right answer for a small, urgent consignment and a poor one for a household. Sea moves volume economically; air moves time. Most families on this lane split the shipment: a modest air consignment of what is needed in the first month, and the bulk of the home by sea.

Does the shipment have to clear customs in Sweden?

Not necessarily. Goods discharged at a North Sea hub can move to Sweden under transit and clear with Tullverket, or clear at the hub and travel onward as EU goods. Both are legitimate; the right one depends on the consignee and the nature of the goods.

Is arriving in January a mistake?

No, but it is a different plan. A January delivery wants a shorter working window, floor and stairwell protection, a gritted approach and a deliberate acclimatisation period before wooden furniture and instruments are unwrapped. A June delivery needs none of that. The mistake is planning a January move as though it were a June one.

What if we do not have a full container’s worth?

Shared container loading is common on this lane, and it is usually the sensible choice for a one- or two-bedroom home. The trade-off is time rather than care: a shared load waits for the box to fill and for the groupage schedule at both ends, which typically adds a couple of weeks against a dedicated container.
