Relocation & freight corridor

Moving to the UAE

India to the UAE is the world’s most travelled relocation corridor by volume — Seemleius moves Indian households, businesses and cargo to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah by sea and air.

  • 20+ years moving households & cargo
  • 184 countries destination corridors covered
  • In-house customs clearance filed by our own team
  • One coordinator from quote to delivery

No relocation corridor in the world carries more people between two countries than the one between India and the UAE. The overseas Indian community in the UAE — the largest anywhere on earth — has been built over decades by professionals across every sector: construction and engineering in the early years, then finance, technology, healthcare, hospitality, retail, logistics and professional services as the UAE economy diversified. Every year, tens of thousands of individuals and families make this move. Seemleius runs the India-to-UAE corridor constantly, and that volume of experience is the foundation of what we offer.

This page sets out how the corridor works from the India end. From here, choose the guide built for your specific move — a household relocation, a corporate move, an employee transfer, commercial freight, or pets and vehicles.

A corridor shaped by Indian origin

The India–UAE move is sea and air, from start to finish. There is no land route. A household moving from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Pune or Ahmedabad reaches Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah by container ship through Jebel Ali Port, or by air through Dubai International or Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport. The sea route is the workhorse for full-household volumes; air is the mode for urgency, high-value items, and situations where the ship schedule does not fit the move date.

The Indian origin matters as much as the UAE destination. Before anything reaches Jebel Ali or the Dubai cargo terminal, it must clear Indian customs as an export. Personal effects and household goods leaving India require a shipping bill, an export declaration, and documentation that reflects the emigrating individual’s FEMA status correctly. We prepare the Indian export file as a standard part of every move on this corridor — it is the step that determines whether the consignment boards cleanly or stalls at the Indian gateway.

India to the UAE — what the corridor looks like

Sea freight to Jebel Ali

The busy, well-established shipping lane from Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai and Cochin to Jebel Ali — Dubai’s container port and one of the world’s largest.

Air freight to Dubai or Abu Dhabi

From Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kochi to DXB cargo or Abu Dhabi for urgent or high-value consignments.

Indian export clearance

Shipping bill, export declaration and FEMA-consistent documentation prepared at the Indian gateway before the consignment departs.

UAE customs clearance

Personal effects, household goods and commercial cargo cleared under Federal Authority for Identity and Customs rules at the destination port or airport.

The communities making this move

The India-to-UAE corridor is not a single type of move. The communities making it are diverse:

  • First-time movers — professionals arriving on employer-sponsored appointments from Indian cities, often joining companies in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah’s free zones
  • Families joining residents — spouses, children and parents joining Indian professionals who are already established in the UAE
  • Students — heading to Dubai’s universities and educational institutions, moving lighter loads with different priorities
  • Returnees — Indian professionals who have spent years in the UAE, returned to India, and are now heading back to the Gulf
  • Corporate transferees — professionals moved by their company from Indian operations to UAE offices
  • Entrepreneurs — Indian business owners relocating to the UAE’s free zones to establish or expand their ventures

How a move from India to the UAE runs

  1. Survey in India. We assess your household, cargo or freight at your Indian origin city and recommend sea, air or a combination for your move date and budget.
  2. Prepare the Indian export file. Shipping bill, export declaration and any supporting documentation are prepared at the Indian origin before anything is packed.
  3. Pack and ship. Our crew packs to export standard at the Indian premises; the consignment is dispatched from the gateway port or airport on the booked route to the UAE.
  4. Clear and deliver in the UAE. UAE customs clearance at Jebel Ali or the destination airport is managed; we coordinate delivery and unpacking at your Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah address.

Transit times, frequency and gateway choice

The India–UAE corridor is one of the shortest international moves we run. Sea freight from Nhava Sheva (JNPT) to Jebel Ali runs about five to nine days port to port, with multiple weekly sailings from Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM and ONE; Mundra to Jebel Ali sits in the same window for shipments routed through Gujarat. Chennai and Cochin sail through transhipment hubs and typically run a few days longer. Air freight from BOM, DEL, BLR, MAA, COK or HYD to DXB, AUH or SHJ is around three to three-and-a-half hours in the air; with Emirates, Etihad, IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, Vistara and SpiceJet all running the route, lift is rarely the constraint — the constraint is gateway slotting at peak season. We book lift early on this corridor because the volume of Indian-origin freight moving into Dubai every week is consistently high.

Indian export — ICEGATE, AD code and FEMA in plain terms

Every household consignment leaving India is filed as an export on ICEGATE, the Indian customs portal. The shipping bill carries the consignor’s details, the AD code of the authorised dealer bank handling the foreign exchange leg, an itemised inventory valuation, and a declaration consistent with the consignor’s FEMA status — resident emigrating, non-resident Indian moving residence, or returning expatriate. For households where the move is funded through a salary remittance or where the consignor holds an NRE/NRO account, the documentation has to align with the FEMA category claimed; we prepare that file at the Indian gateway as a standard step so it stands up to scrutiny if customs queries the entry.

UAE arrival — Mirsal 2, 5% duty and 5% VAT

At Jebel Ali, the import declaration goes through Mirsal 2, Dubai Customs’ electronic declaration system. Personal effects imported by an incoming UAE resident typically attract a 5% UAE import duty — the standard GCC common external tariff — and 5% UAE VAT on the assessed value, although used personal effects accompanying a first-time UAE resident often qualify for relief subject to the documentation submitted. We prepare the Mirsal 2 entry with the duty and VAT position established up front so there are no surprises at the port; for households importing through a free-zone address, the treatment differs and we set that out in writing before the container sails.

The Indian community context

Around 3.5 million Indians live in the UAE — roughly 35% of the country’s population and the largest single national community anywhere in the Gulf. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat are all heavily represented; neighbourhoods like Bur Dubai, Karama, Deira and Al Nahda (Sharjah) function almost as Indian quarters within the UAE. For most new arrivals this means the cultural transition is gentle — familiar food, schools teaching the Indian curriculum, places of worship and professional networks are all in place. The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General in Dubai handle attestation and consular services for the community.

What the corridor costs, and what actually moves the number

Nobody can quote an India–UAE move honestly from a phone call, because the price is built from volume and routing rather than read off a rate card. What follows is the list of variables that genuinely move the figure, in roughly the order they matter.

  • Cubic volume, not weight. Sea freight on this lane is priced on the space your goods occupy. A one-bedroom Bengaluru flat and a four-bedroom Ahmedabad villa sit at opposite ends of the same tariff.
  • Whether you fill a container. A 20ft box that goes out three-quarters empty costs what a full one costs. Below roughly a two-bedroom load, groupage — sharing the container with other India–UAE consignments — is usually the cheaper answer, at the price of a looser delivery date.
  • The inland leg in India. Kochi to Cochin Port is an hour. Hyderabad to Nhava Sheva is two days of road haulage. That difference is real money and it is settled by geography, not by negotiation.
  • The air split. Most families send a small air consignment ahead — bedding, kitchen basics, work equipment — and let the rest follow by sea. That split is priced separately from the sea load, so its size is a lever you control.
  • Access at both ends. A third-floor walk-up in Pune and a Dubai Marina tower with an evening-only service lift both add crew hours.
  • Duty and tax at the UAE end. The assessed value of the consignment drives the customs position, and that position is settled on paper before the vessel sails rather than discovered at the gate.
  • Marine cover. Priced against the declared replacement value of the inventory. It is optional; on a lane this short it is still worth having.

What the UAE will not let through, and what it lets through only with paperwork

The UAE runs a stricter import list than most destinations Indian households ship to, and the consequences of getting it wrong land on the whole container rather than on the single offending item. A queried consignment is opened, inspected line by line and held while the question is resolved. On a lane where the sea crossing itself is a matter of days, an inspection hold becomes by far the longest part of the journey.

Prohibited outright are narcotic and psychotropic substances, weapons and realistic replicas, gambling equipment, ivory and rhino horn, and printed or recorded material judged offensive to Islamic teaching or to public morals. Several things that are unremarkable in an Indian kitchen or medicine cabinet sit on the restricted side: poppy seeds, products containing cannabidiol or poppy derivatives, electronic cigarettes and vaping liquids, drones, laser pointers, satellite receivers and some communications equipment. Prescription medicines — particularly anything sedative, opioid or containing codeine — are controlled, and travel with the prescription and a physician’s letter rather than loose in a carton.

Alcohol deserves its own sentence. It is not part of a household consignment on this corridor. Do not pack it, do not let a well-meaning relative pack it, and do not assume a sealed gift box is treated differently from an open bottle.

Plants, soil, seeds and untreated wood fall under the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. Foodstuffs are permitted in domestic quantities but are label-checked, and unlabelled jars of homemade pickle or masala are the most common single reason an Indian household container gets opened.

The definitive lists are published by the Federal Authority for Identity and Customs and by the individual emirate customs administrations, and they are revised. Our survey includes a line-by-line pass over the inventory against the current position, and anything questionable is either left in India or declared properly before packing begins — never quietly boxed and hoped for.

Booking windows through the Indian year

This lane has enough sailings that vessel space is rarely the constraint. Crew availability, port congestion and delivery access at the UAE end are.

Period What it does to a move
March Indian financial year-end. Commercial freight surges, and household crews in Mumbai and Chennai book out first.
June to September South-west monsoon. Loading days on the west coast get wet, Nhava Sheva and Cochin lose working hours to rain, and packing has to be moisture-proofed rather than merely competent.
Late July to August Peak family season, timed to the UAE school year. The busiest window on the corridor and the one needing the earliest booking.
Ramadan UAE working hours shorten and customs and delivery windows compress with them. Arrival dates need more slack than usual.
December to February The comfortable months. Delivery crews can work through the middle of the day in Dubai, and the corridor is at its easiest to plan.

Six weeks between first survey and vessel is a comfortable plan. Four is workable. Under two, the answer is usually a small air consignment now with the sea load a fortnight behind — a legitimate way to run this move, not a failure.

Questions that come up on nearly every move to the UAE

Should the move wait until the UAE address is confirmed?

No. The consignment can be prepared, cleared for export and shipped against a start date and a destination emirate; the exact delivery address is needed by the time the vessel arrives, not by the time it loads. Where the address is still open, the goods sit for a short free period at the destination and then move into storage — a cost worth planning for rather than avoiding by delaying the whole move.

Is it cheaper to sell up in India and buy again in Dubai?

For a studio or a single professional in rented furnished accommodation, often yes. For a family with a full household of solid-wood furniture, almost never — replacement cost in the UAE for equivalent pieces runs well ahead of the freight. The honest test is to price the shipment and the replacement list side by side before deciding, and a coordinator will do that with you before you commit to either.

Can one shipment cover deliveries in two emirates?

Yes, and it is common where a family and an office move together, or where relatives split a container. The consignment clears at one point of entry and the second leg goes by road; the emirates are a short drive apart and that leg is inexpensive. It has to be declared as a split delivery on the import file from the start, not arranged after arrival.

Does Seemleius International handle the residence side of the move?

No. We are a relocation partner, not an immigration adviser. Our work starts with your goods, your pets and your vehicles, and finishes when they are in the right rooms at the other end. Anything concerning your right to live and work in the UAE sits with your employer, your sponsor or a licensed adviser, and the shipment is then scheduled around the start date they give you.

How much of this can be run from the UAE if I have already flown?

All of it. A good share of the moves behind this corridor were arranged by someone already at the destination, with a relative or a colleague holding the keys in India on survey and packing day. A video survey, a written authority and a nominated key-holder are enough.
