Pets & Vehicle Relocation to Sweden

Relocating pets and vehicles from India to Sweden — Indian export requirements, EU entry conditions including titre tests, and cold-climate welfare considerations for animals.

Families moving from India to Sweden who want to bring a pet or a vehicle will find that the process is manageable but has a firm lead-time requirement. For pets from India, the EU’s third-country import rules apply — and those rules include a titre test waiting period that makes it impossible to compress the timeline past a certain point. For vehicles, Indian export clearance must be arranged before the car leaves, and Swedish import duties, registration and roadworthiness requirements must be understood before the shipping decision is made. Seemleius integrates both into the wider move plan from the first conversation, because adding either at the last minute creates complications that cannot easily be resolved.

Bringing a pet from India to Sweden

India is classified as a third country for EU pet import purposes and is not on the approved list that allows simplified entry. Animals from India entering Sweden must satisfy the full third-country requirements:

  • ISO-standard 15-digit microchip implanted before the rabies vaccination
  • Rabies vaccination administered after microchipping, with a current valid certificate
  • Rabies antibody titre test (FAVN test) carried out at an EU-approved laboratory — several accredited laboratories operate in Indian cities including Mumbai and Delhi; the titre test result must meet the required antibody threshold
  • A waiting period of at least three months after a satisfactory titre test result before the animal may enter an EU country
  • An Indian export health certificate from the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (DADF) issued before travel
  • An official EU health certificate (Annex IV format) issued by an officially authorised veterinarian within 10 days of travel
  • Entry through an approved point of entry — a Travellers’ Point of Entry where the animal is moving with its owner, or a Border Control Post where it moves as a commercial consignment; pets from India travel as IATA-regulated air cargo, not as checked baggage

The three-month waiting period is biological and regulatory — it cannot be waived or shortened. Combined with the time needed to schedule the titre test and receive the results, families moving from India to Sweden should begin this process at least four to five months before the intended travel date. We map the pet timeline to your household move date at the outset, so this sequence is built into the plan rather than discovered too late.

Cold-climate welfare in transit

An animal travelling from a warm Indian city to Sweden — particularly in autumn or winter — is making a significant temperature change. IATA Live Animals Regulations govern the welfare standards for cargo-transported animals, but the quality of care during the actual transit — appropriate crating, temperature monitoring, water provision, and handling at stopover airports — varies between operators. We coordinate with accredited IATA-compliant cargo handlers who are experienced in the India–Europe route and who understand the specific welfare considerations of this temperature range.

Exporting and importing a vehicle

Vehicles leaving India for international shipping require an export clearance from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the registration state, a no-objection certificate, an export customs declaration, and a certificate of origin. We prepare the Indian vehicle export file alongside the rest of the household documentation at the Indian origin.

On arrival in Sweden, a vehicle imported from India faces EU import duty and Swedish VAT on its declared value. Once cleared, it must go through the Transportstyrelsen registration process — an origin check followed by a registration inspection at an accredited testing station — before it can be driven legally. Swedish law also requires winter tyres to be fitted between 1 December and 31 March, and in practice many drivers fit them earlier. An Indian-market car is right-hand drive and built for left-hand traffic, whereas Sweden drives on the right, so headlamp aim and other EU type-approval details normally have to be corrected before it can be registered. We explain the full cost picture — freight, duties, VAT, inspection, potential modifications — before the decision to ship is made.

How it runs

  1. Tell us what is moving. Pet species, breed, age and current vaccination status; vehicle make, model, year and the RTO registration state in India. Your intended move dates and Swedish destination.
  2. Map the requirements. We confirm the titre test timeline for the pet and the Indian export and Swedish import requirements for the vehicle, flagging anything that must start immediately.
  3. Prepare Indian documentation. Pet export and vehicle export files are arranged in India alongside the household paperwork.
  4. Book and align. IATA-accredited pet air cargo and container vehicle freight are booked and timed so both the pet and the vehicle arrive in Sweden in a sensible sequence with your household shipment.

The titre test waiting period means the pet process must begin months before the move. Tell us early — five months or more is the right horizon for pets from India. Get in touch and we will map the complete timeline across the household, the pet and the vehicle.

The pet timeline counted backwards from the flight

The three-month wait is the immovable object in this process, and the mistake that costs families their travel date is starting the clock at the wrong point. The wait does not run from the vaccination. It runs from the day the blood sample for the antibody test was taken, and that sample cannot be drawn until at least thirty days after the rabies vaccination. Laid out as a calendar, working back from the intended arrival in Sweden, it looks like this.

When What happens
Five to six months before ISO microchip implanted. Rabies vaccination given afterwards — if the chip goes in second, the vaccination does not count and has to be repeated.
Four to five months before Blood sample drawn, no earlier than thirty days after the vaccination, and sent to a laboratory approved by the EU. The result must reach the required antibody level of at least 0.5 IU per millilitre.
Three months before The waiting period runs from the date of that blood draw. Nothing shortens it.
Six to eight weeks before Crate sized and bought so the animal has weeks to get used to sleeping in it. Flight booked as IATA-regulated cargo.
Two weeks before Indian export health certificate arranged through the relevant animal husbandry authority.
Within ten days of arrival The EU animal health certificate is issued by an official veterinarian. This is a hard window — a certificate dated too early is not usable.

Two further distinctions matter. Moving up to five animals with their owner is treated as non-commercial movement and enters through a designated Travellers’ Point of Entry, where the documents and the microchip are checked. More than five animals, or any movement linked to a sale or transfer of ownership, is commercial: it needs a health entry document lodged in the EU’s TRACES system before arrival and must enter through a Border Control Post. And a piece of good news specific to Sweden — the country dropped its own tapeworm treatment requirement in 2011, so unlike arrivals into Finland, Ireland, Malta or Norway, dogs entering Sweden do not need that treatment recorded before travel. Dogs do have to be registered with the Swedish agricultural authority after arrival, which is the owner’s task once they are settled.

Cat in travel carrier ready for relocation
Buy the crate months early. An animal that already sleeps in it travels far better.

Flying an animal into a Nordic winter

The crate is the whole welfare story in the air, and it is governed by the IATA Live Animals Regulations rather than by preference. The animal must be able to stand up fully, turn around and lie down naturally; a crate bought a size too small is the commonest reason a shipment is refused at the counter. Ventilation on the required number of sides, a secure door, absorbent bedding and fixed water and food containers accessible from outside are all specified rather than optional.

Winter adds real constraints on this lane. Carriers apply temperature embargoes at both ends of a journey, and a December arrival at Arlanda can involve an apron transfer in genuinely cold air and a road leg afterwards, so night arrivals are avoided where the schedule allows it and the ground handling is confirmed in advance. Water in an open bowl freezes; the standard answer is to freeze water into the bowl before departure so it melts through the journey rather than spilling in handling. Snub-nosed breeds — pugs, bulldogs, Persian cats — are restricted or refused by many carriers because of their breathing under stress, and that constraint has to be checked before a flight is planned rather than after. We arrange the crating to IATA standard and book the animal as accompanied air cargo with handlers used to the India–Europe routing; the veterinary steps above remain the owner’s to complete with their own vet.

The honest arithmetic on shipping an Indian car to Sweden

For most households the answer is that it is not worth it, and it is better to say that plainly than to quote the freight and let the owner find out afterwards. The obstacles stack up.

  • Approval. A vehicle without EU type approval has to go through an individual approval route to be registered, and an Indian-market car will not usually hold EU approval. That means engineering evidence, possible modifications and a registration inspection rather than a formality.
  • The side of the road. Indian cars are right-hand drive for left-hand traffic; Sweden drives on the right. The car is legal to drive, but headlamp aim and other details normally need correcting, and overtaking on a two-lane road in the dark and the wet from the wrong seat is a genuine safety consideration for eight months of the year.
  • Duty and tax. A car imported from a third country attracts the Common Customs Tariff rate for passenger vehicles plus Swedish moms at twenty-five per cent, and the tax is calculated on the value including freight and duty, not on the value alone.
  • Running it. Swedish annual vehicle tax is emissions-weighted, and older Indian-market petrol engines land at the unfavourable end of it. Parts and dealer support for models never sold in Europe are a standing problem. Stockholm and Gothenburg both operate congestion charging.
  • Resale. A right-hand-drive car of a model unknown in Sweden has a thin second-hand market, which is where much of the theoretical saving disappears.
  • Winter. Winter tyres are required from the start of December to the end of March when winter road conditions prevail, and studded tyres are allowed from October to mid-April. That is a set of tyres, wheels and storage on top of everything else, for a car not designed with Nordic winters in mind.

Where shipping a vehicle does make sense is at the two ends of the range: a classic or enthusiast car with real personal value, and specialist or adapted vehicles that cannot simply be replaced. For an ordinary family saloon, buying in Sweden almost always wins on total cost and on the amount of the first year spent dealing with it.

Motorcycles, bicycles and everything in between

The same approval logic applies to a motorcycle as to a car, and the calculation often comes out better: a Royal Enfield or a similar machine has a following in Europe, parts are obtainable, and the value is more likely to survive the process. Riding season in Sweden is short, and most owners store the bike over winter, which is worth factoring into the decision.

Bicycles are straightforward and travel well inside a household consignment, pedals off and handlebars turned. Electric bicycles and scooters are not straightforward, because their lithium batteries are classed as dangerous goods. Airlines restrict them tightly and a sea shipment needs the battery correctly declared, packed to the applicable dangerous goods rules and often shipped separately from the frame. Any petrol machine — a bike, a generator, a mower — must be drained of fuel and have its battery disconnected before it goes into a container, and the container should be documented accordingly.

Questions we are asked about pets and vehicles on this route

Can the pet travel in the cabin or as checked baggage?

Not on this routing. Animals entering the EU from India travel as regulated air cargo with the documentary checks that go with it, which is also why the crate specification is not negotiable.

What if the antibody test result is below the threshold?

The animal is revaccinated and retested, and the three-month clock restarts from the new blood draw. This is the reason to begin five to six months out rather than four — it leaves room for one failed result without losing the travel date.

Is there quarantine in Sweden?

Not where the third-country requirements have been met correctly and the paperwork is in order. The waiting period substitutes for quarantine, which is precisely why it cannot be shortened.

Should the car go in a container or on a ro-ro sailing?

A container protects the vehicle better and can share space with household goods; a ro-ro sailing into Copenhagen Malmö Port is often simpler for a single vehicle. Which is cheaper depends on the sailing rather than on the method.

How early should we tell you about a pet or a vehicle?

At the first conversation, before the household dates are fixed. The pet timeline is the longest lead item in the entire move, and a vehicle decision made late is a decision made without the cost picture.
