Moving to Sweden

Household & Personal Moves to Sweden

Moving your home from India to Sweden — Indian export paperwork, cold-climate packing, EU Transfer of Residence customs, and delivery to Stockholm, Gothenburg or Malmö.

A household move from India to Sweden involves a sea transit of roughly twenty-five to thirty days on the Nhava Sheva to Gothenburg lane — often with a transhipment leg through Hamburg or Antwerp — a significant climate change between the origin and the destination, and two customs processes: one in India when the goods leave, and one in Sweden when they arrive. Managing all three well is the difference between a move that feels calm and one that generates weeks of uncertainty. Seemleius manages the full chain from your Indian home to your Swedish address, with one coordinator holding it throughout.

The Indian export process — the starting point

Many families moving abroad from India do not realise that their household goods must be formally cleared for export before they can leave the country. A Shipping Bill must be filed on the ICEGATE electronic gateway, an export declaration prepared, and the goods cleared at the Indian gateway port. The household’s banker registers the Authorised Dealer (AD) code with the port of loading so the export is recognised within the FEMA framework. For families emigrating — rather than moving temporarily — the documentation should also be consistent with the individual’s FEMA status as an emigrant. Getting this right at the India end is what ensures the goods board cleanly at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin without delays.

We handle the Indian export file as a standard part of every household move on this corridor. The family does not need to navigate Indian customs export procedures; that is our job.

Transit to Sweden — planning the gap

Sea freight from India to Sweden takes twenty-five to thirty days when routed direct, and a week or two more when transhipped through Hamburg or Antwerp — which is the more common pattern for North European services calling at Gothenburg. That means most families arrive in Sweden before their household does, and that gap needs planning. Some households send a small air consignment ahead on Air India direct BOM/DEL to ARN or on SAS via Frankfurt or Copenhagen — essentials for the first weeks, the things that cannot wait on the ship. Others arrange temporary furnished accommodation for the transit period. We raise this question at the survey stage and help you plan the split between air and sea based on what is actually in your home and when you need it.

Personnummer — the first administrative cascade

Almost everything practical in Swedish life flows from the personnummer, the ten-digit identity number issued by Skatteverket. The cascade is consistent: Skatteverket registration produces the personnummer, which unlocks a Swedish bank account, which enables BankID digital identity, which in turn opens a mobile phone contract, a permanent residential lease, and access to most government services online. Issuance takes several weeks. Families who understand that sequence before leaving India lose less of the first month to it. The registration is the household’s own to make; what the move plan contributes is a delivery date that does not land in the middle of it.

Schools and healthcare — what families plan around

Sweden runs a fritt skolval (free school choice) system: families can apply to municipal schools or to friskolor (independent schools funded by the same vouchers), and the gymnasium years follow a national programme structure. Popular Stockholm and Gothenburg schools fill early, so the school search runs in parallel with the move rather than after arrival. Healthcare is administered by Försäkringskassan and the regional vårdcentral (primary-care centre); access is tied to the personnummer. Families with school-age children and any pre-existing prescriptions should expect a short bridging period before they are fully registered with a vårdcentral and should travel with adequate medication and English-language summaries of medical history.

Packing for India’s climate and Sweden’s

The India–Sweden route moves goods from a hot, humid origin to a cold destination where winter temperatures can fall well below zero. That range matters for packing. Wooden furniture can respond badly to sudden temperature changes when a container is opened. Electronics can develop condensation issues if the interior of a crate goes from monsoon-temperature transit to a Swedish winter. We use vapour barriers, desiccants and material choices suited to the full journey — not just to loading conditions in Mumbai or Chennai. Families should also plan for a separate clothing reality: the wardrobe that worked at home will not be enough for a Swedish February, and parkas, insulated boots and base layers are best bought in Sweden where sizing and ratings match the climate.

Indian export clearance

Shipping Bill via ICEGATE, AD code and FEMA-consistent paperwork prepared at the Indian gateway — Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin.

Climate-appropriate packing

Materials chosen for the full journey: hot and humid in India, cold and potentially icy at the Swedish delivery end.

Flyttgods transfer-of-residence relief

Qualifying households import personal effects free of duty and twenty-five-per-cent MOMS via Form Tv 740.20 — we prepare and file the documentation.

Delivery and unpacking

We unpack and place your belongings in your Swedish home in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Uppsala or Lund, with delivery logistics planned for the actual access conditions.

What we move

  • Furniture — disassembled at the Indian origin, packed for a multi-week sea transit, and reassembled in your Swedish home
  • Electronics and appliances — packed with moisture protection for the temperature range from India to a Swedish winter
  • Art, religious items, fragile objects — individually crated where warranted, with the long sea leg in mind
  • Textiles, books, kitchen contents and the full domestic fabric of an Indian home

How your household move runs

  1. Survey in India. We assess your home at your origin city — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kochi — and agree the right freight mix for your dates and budget.
  2. Prepare the Indian export file. Shipping Bill, AD code reconciliation, export declaration and FEMA-consistent paperwork are prepared before anything is packed.
  3. Pack and ship. Climate-appropriate packing is applied across the shipment; the full inventory is built. The consignment leaves the Indian gateway on schedule.
  4. Clear and deliver in Sweden. Tullverket clearance via TDS, including Flyttgods documentation for qualifying moves, is managed. We deliver, unpack and place at your Swedish address.

The earlier we begin, the better we can plan the split between what travels by air and what travels by sea — and the smoother the personnummer and school cascade can run on the Swedish side. Request your quote and tell us your origin city in India and where in Sweden you are headed.

The first forty-eight hours after a winter delivery

This is the single most useful thing to know about the India–Sweden lane, and it takes two minutes to explain and saves a great deal of damage. Your belongings will have been packed in warm, humid air — Chennai in August sits above eighty per cent relative humidity — spent five or six weeks in a steel box, and arrived into a Swedish flat where the winter indoor humidity with the heating running can be twenty per cent. Nothing about that transition is dangerous if it happens slowly. All of the harm comes from doing it quickly.

The rule is simply this: on a cold delivery day, let the sealed cartons and crates stand in the room for a day, ideally two, before anything is opened. The packaging is an insulator. Contents inside it warm up gradually and evenly, and any moisture in the air condenses on the outside of the wrapping rather than on the cold surface of a lacquered cabinet or a circuit board. Open a carton the moment it comes off a sub-zero vehicle and you invite condensation directly onto the object.

After that, a short list of things that reward patience:

  • Solid wood furniture. Teak, rosewood, sheesham and mango wood all shed moisture in a dry heated flat. Expect joints to tighten and small gaps to open across panels over the first winter. Keeping the room humidity nearer forty per cent — a simple humidifier does it — is the difference between seasoning and splitting.
  • Instruments. A harmonium, a sitar, a tabla, a violin or a piano should come out of its case slowly and be tuned days later, not on delivery day. Wooden soundboards and skins move a lot with humidity, and a rapid change is exactly what cracks them.
  • Electronics. Leave televisions, computers and audio equipment at room temperature for several hours before applying power. Switching on a cold device in a warm room is the classic way to lose one.
  • Artwork and paper. Canvases, framed prints and books want to be unwrapped in the room where they will live, not in an unheated hallway.
  • Brass, copper and silver. Condensation is what tarnishes them. Slow warming and dry storage matter more than polish.

Sealed cartons are insulation. On a cold delivery day, that is the point.

What is worth shipping to Sweden, and what is not

The electrical question resolves easily. Sweden runs at two hundred and thirty volts and fifty hertz, exactly as India does, so appliances work without transformers. Only the plug differs — Sweden uses the earthed Schuko pattern — and fitting the right leads before the shipment sails is tidier than living with a house full of adapters. Mixer grinders, wet grinders, pressure cookers, induction hobs and rice cookers all travel well and are expensive or hard to find in Sweden, which makes them among the best things in the container.

Against that, a few categories rarely justify the space. Beds and mattresses are the biggest: Swedish frames and bedlinen work to a two-metre length and to a different width series, so an Indian mattress usually fits nothing and Indian sheets fit no Swedish bed. Large wardrobes are often a poor fit for the room proportions in a Swedish flat, which is built around freestanding storage but on Nordic dimensions. Gas cooking equipment has limited use, as Swedish kitchens are overwhelmingly electric and induction. And bulky low-value furniture, plastic storage and anything close to the end of its life is simply cubic metres you pay to move twice.

Two things people underestimate and should ship: warm bedding and rugs, which make a Swedish winter flat markedly more comfortable and are pleasant to have from day one, and ceiling light fittings if you own good ones, since Swedish rental flats frequently come with a fitting point and nothing hanging from it.

Getting a container to a Swedish front door

Delivery day in Sweden has its own choreography and most of it is settled in advance. There will be a keypad code on the street door, and often a second one for the goods entrance. Older buildings in central Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö may have no lift at all, or a small cage lift that will not take a sofa, in which case large pieces are carried or hoisted — hoisting through a window is an ordinary Swedish solution, not an exotic one, but it needs the housing association’s agreement and a booked slot. Where a lift exists it is reserved and padded with the caretaker beforehand. Many residential streets cannot take a forty-foot trailer, so the container is stripped at a depot and shuttled in on a smaller vehicle. And between November and March, floor protection through the stairwell is essential, because road grit and salt travel indoors on every boot.

How the quote for a household on this lane is built

A household quote is assembled from volume, mode, origin labour and destination access, and the survey exists to pin down all four. Volume after packing is the primary driver: a two-bedroom home usually loads comfortably into a twenty-foot container, while a full family house wants a forty-foot. Below roughly half a container, a shared load is generally the better economic answer, at the cost of a couple of extra weeks waiting on consolidation at both ends. Origin services cover the packing crew, materials, dismantling and the road leg to Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin. Destination services cover the Swedish entry, haulage from Gothenburg, the access constraints above and any storage between arrival and a lease start. Insurance is priced on declared replacement value, not on weight, which is why an inventory with realistic values on it is worth the hour it takes.

Timing the move against the Swedish year

Two periods to avoid if there is any flexibility. Midsummer, in the second half of June, closes the country for several days. The industrial holiday across roughly weeks twenty-eight to thirty-one in July empties a great deal of Sweden, including the building caretakers and lift technicians a delivery depends on. December is quiet from a few days before Christmas until after Epiphany. The best arrival windows are April to mid-June and late August through October, when the days are long, the roads are clear and everybody is at work.

Further questions from families on this route

How much should we plan to send by air?

Enough for four to six weeks of ordinary life: clothing for the season you are arriving into, kitchen essentials, school materials, medication and the documents you cannot replace. Beyond that the sea shipment is the cheaper answer.

Do we need winter clothes before the container arrives?

Yes, and they are best bought in Sweden. Sizing, insulation ratings and footwear grip are designed for the conditions, and an Indian winter wardrobe will not cover a Stockholm February whatever it cost.

Can part of the household stay in storage in India?

It often should. Households that expect to move again inside Sweden within a year sometimes ship the essential home and leave the rest in Indian storage until the second address is settled.

What happens if we arrive before the shipment?

That is the normal case rather than the exception on this lane, and it is why the air-and-sea split is discussed at the survey. Plan for several weeks in a furnished or partly furnished flat and size the air consignment accordingly.
