India to Netherlands: 30% ruling and the Brainport tech corridor

The India-to-Netherlands corridor has grown quietly but steadily over the last four years. ASML's expansion in Veldhoven, the broader Brainport Eindhoven ecosystem, and the long-running pipeline of Indian engineers into Philips, NXP and the semiconductor supply chain has turned what used to be a niche destination into a regular line item on our Bengaluru and Pune origin desk. Below is what the corridor looks like in 2026, and what changes when families realise the 30 per cent ruling is not quite what they thought it was.

The 30 per cent ruling in 2026: tighter, but still material

The Dutch 30 per cent ruling — a partial tax exemption on the salary of qualifying expatriate employees — has been on a tapering path since 2024. The current shape is roughly 30 per cent of gross salary exempt for the first twenty months of the five-year qualifying period, dropping to 20 per cent for the next twenty, and 10 per cent for the final twenty months. The minimum salary threshold for 2026 is in the EUR 46,000 region for general employees and lower for under-thirties holding a master's degree.

For an Indian software engineer joining ASML or NXP on a EUR 75,000 to EUR 95,000 package, the ruling still delivers meaningful uplift in net pay over the first two years. The mistake we see is families budgeting their first-year cost-of-living against the gross figure rather than against the net-after-ruling figure, then realising at year three that the buffer is thinner than they assumed.

What the ruling does not cover

  • Bonuses paid in the calendar year you arrive are sometimes partly outside the ruling depending on when they vest
  • The exemption does not extend to your spouse's income if they take up Dutch employment separately
  • The 150-kilometre rule still applies — you must have lived more than 150 km from the Dutch border for at least 16 of the 24 months before starting work

Brainport Eindhoven: the geography of the corridor

The Brainport region is centred on Eindhoven, with major employers spread across Veldhoven (ASML), High Tech Campus (Philips, NXP, IMEC), Helmond and the satellite towns. Most Indian engineers we move into the corridor end up living in Eindhoven city, Veldhoven, Waalre or Best, with a daily commute that is usually a 15 to 30 minute drive or cycle.

Housing is the corridor's biggest pressure point in 2026. The Eindhoven rental market has been tight since 2023 and remains so. We strongly suggest a temporary housing bridge of six to twelve weeks while you locate a permanent rental, rather than landing into a permanent contract sight-unseen.

The Anmeldung-equivalent: BSN and gemeente registration

Within five days of arrival in the Netherlands, you must register at the local gemeente (municipality) where you live. This registration generates your BSN (Burgerservicenummer), which is the equivalent of an Aadhaar number for Dutch life — you cannot open a bank account, sign a permanent rental contract, or activate a SIM card on most plans without it.

The five-day window is more theoretical than enforced, but the dependent chain of activities behind the BSN means delay is costly. We routinely build the gemeente appointment into the arrival-week schedule, ideally for day two or three.

Shipping volumes and the Rotterdam reality

For a family-sized move into the Brainport region, the consignment lands at Rotterdam and trucks the final 130 kilometres to Eindhoven or its satellite towns. Rotterdam is the most efficient European gateway by some distance — we routinely see customs clearance inside 48 hours and onward delivery within four working days of port arrival.

From a Mumbai or Nhava Sheva origin, the realistic door-to-door is 35 to 45 days for a 20-foot container and 25 to 35 days for groupage (LCL). From Chennai, add three to five days for the feeder consolidation into a Colombo or Singapore hub.

The Indian community on the ground

Eindhoven's Indian community is heavily weighted towards engineering professionals — predominantly Telugu, Tamil and North Indian families connected to the semiconductor and high-tech sector. There is now a strong network of Indian groceries (the South Asian shop on Aalsterweg is the standard reference), three temples within a 40-kilometre radius, and weekend community gatherings that are easy to plug into.

School-age children typically attend either the International School Eindhoven (ISE) or one of the Dutch primary schools with an early-immersion programme. ISE has a long waitlist — if a school place matters to your timeline, the school application should go in before the work permit, not after.

What surprises families in the first six months

Three things, in our experience. First, that the gross-to-net ratio on Dutch salaries is harsher than the 30 per cent ruling suggests once social security and Zorgverzekering (mandatory health insurance) are netted out. Second, that everything stops on Sunday — supermarket hours, municipal offices, doctor availability — in a way that takes a full quarter to adjust to. Third, that the bicycle is genuinely the primary means of getting around, not a recreational supplement — budget for two reasonable bikes per adult and a child seat per under-eight.

The scoping conversation

If the Netherlands is on your shortlist or the offer letter has landed, the most useful first conversation is a fifteen-minute scoping call. We will map your start date against the gemeente appointment, the rental search window and the school application calendar, and tell you honestly whether to move in one consignment or run a small air-shipment to bridge the housing gap.
