Writing an inventory a Bulgarian customs officer can read

The inventory does two jobs at once. It is the basis of the Indian shipping bill, and it becomes — translated into Bulgarian by the broker — the schedule to the import declaration and the relief claim. Words that are ordinary in an Indian household do not survive translation well. An almirah is a steel wardrobe; a diwan is a daybed; a mandir is a prayer cabinet; and Godrej is a brand name, not a description. We write the inventory in plain descriptive English — “wooden dining table, six chairs, used” — with a sensible used value against each line, so that what the broker files in Cyrillic says exactly what is in the carton. Items bought in the last six months are listed separately and marked as such, which keeps the rest of the relief claim clean. Your own name goes on the inventory precisely as it is printed in your passport, and that spelling should be the one on your lease.

Arriving in a Sofia panel block, a Plovdiv lane, or a coast-road flat

A Bulgarian address tells the delivery crew a great deal. “ж.к. Младост 1, бл. 23, вх. Б, ет. 5, ап. 40” is a housing estate, block 23, entrance B, fifth floor, flat 40 — a 1980s panel building with a lift built for people rather than furniture, and a courtyard the truck may not be able to enter. Sofia’s older centre has apartments with high ceilings and beautiful staircases that a three-seater sofa will not turn on. Plovdiv’s old town is cobbled, steep and closed to lorries; a move there is a van at the bottom of the hill and a carry. The Black Sea cities are easier, except in July and August when the coast road into Varna and Burgas is one long queue. We survey the destination as carefully as the origin and choose the vehicle, the crew size and the delivery hour to match.

Winter changes the picture again. Sofia clears its boulevards fast, but the paths between blocks stay icy for weeks, and deliveries over the Balkan range from Varna are the ones that get cancelled. Sealed, shelf-stable, commercially packaged dry goods in personal quantities travel with a household and clear without fuss. Fresh produce, meat, dairy and anything homemade do not. Sofia has Indian grocers, so ship the irreplaceable brands and buy the rest.

Will our Indian television and mixer work?

The voltage matches. Televisions need a Bulgarian or EU-standard plug and will pick up local channels through a box; the mixer-grinder simply needs an adaptor, and every Indian kitchen in Sofia has one.
