Belize is an unusual Caribbean-Central American destination for Indian movers, and an increasingly deliberate one. English is the official language, the country runs a well-known Qualified Retired Persons (QRP) programme that appeals to retirees, and a long-established Indian-origin community gives newcomers a foothold. The India–Belize corridor is modest in volume but real, serving retirees, remote professionals drawn to the coast and cayes, and traders connecting Indian goods to a small but open market.

As with every long-haul move, the India–Belize journey is decided at the India end. Export customs clearance through ICEGATE, the shipping bill filed under the Customs Act, AD code registration with the originating port and export-grade packing for a multi-week ocean transit all set the tone. Seemleius coordinates the India side and the Belize side as one continuous piece of work.

The India–Belize corridor

Belize has no direct deep-sea service from India, so household and commercial cargo ships as containers from Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra, Chennai or Cochin and transships — typically through a US Gulf gateway such as Houston, or a Caribbean hub — before the feeder leg into the Port of Belize at Belize City, the country’s main commercial port, or the Big Creek port in the south. Realistic door-to-port transit ranges from roughly six to nine weeks depending on the connection. We quote the routing as it actually is.

Air freight from Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), Bengaluru (BLR) or Chennai (MAA) routes via a US or European hub into Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) near Belize City, used when timelines are tight. On arrival the Belize Customs & Excise Department handles clearance; retirees admitted under the QRP programme enjoy specific duty exemptions on imported household goods and a personal vehicle, and we prepare the customs paperwork that evidences that relief precisely so it is not lost to a documentation error.

Sea and air options

Containerised sea freight via a US Gulf or Caribbean hub into Belize City or Big Creek, or air freight into Philip Goldson (BZE) when the schedule demands it.

One coordinator, both ends

One coordinator owns your India survey, ICEGATE documentation, dispatch and Belize delivery — no gaps across the transhipment connection.

Who moves on this corridor

The India–Belize route serves several mover types on one page. Households are frequently QRP retirees and remote workers relocating furniture, personal effects and family belongings. Business and office moves cover entrepreneurs establishing tourism, agriculture or trading ventures who need office equipment and records shipped. Commercial freight covers Indian suppliers and traders sending stock, machinery or building materials. We apply the same coordinated method to each.

Where we deliver in Belize

We deliver throughout the country: Belize City and the central coast; the capital Belmopan inland in the Cayo District; San Ignacio and the western Cayo region; the northern towns of Orange Walk and Corozal; Dangriga and Punta Gorda in the south; and the island communities of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, served by domestic onward transport.

How your move works

  1. India-side survey. We assess volume and contents at your home or office in India — in person in major cities or by video — and return a clear quote with sea and air options and a realistic Belize arrival window.
  2. Export documentation. Indian export paperwork is prepared: shipping bill filed through ICEGATE, AD code confirmed, packing list and invoice, plus the documents Belize customs will expect when relief on household goods is claimed.
  3. Pack and dispatch. Our crew packs to export standard from your India origin, and the shipment is booked on the confirmed transhipment routing to Belize City or flown via hub to BZE.
  4. Clear and deliver in Belize. We manage Customs & Excise clearance, apply QRP or used-goods relief where you qualify, and coordinate onward delivery to your address.

Houston, the Gulf and the feeder into Belize City

Belize is served by small vessels, and understanding that explains most of what follows. The Port of Belize at Belize City is a shallow-draught facility, and the container ships that call there are feeders working the western Caribbean rather than the deep-sea vessels that carry cargo across the Indian Ocean. So a move from India is two voyages: a long one from Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Cochin to a hub, and a short one from the hub to Belize. The hub is usually a US Gulf port, most often Houston, or a Caribbean transhipment point such as Kingston in Jamaica or Manzanillo in Panama. From any of them the feeder rotation to Belize City is regular but not frequent, and a missed connection is measured in the next sailing rather than the next day.

Big Creek, in the Stann Creek district in the south, is the country’s other commercial port. It was built around bananas and citrus and is relevant to a household move only if the destination is Placencia or the far south, where road delivery from Belize City would be long. It is possible in principle to bring cargo down through Mexico by road from a US port, and some commercial traffic does; for a home from India it seldom beats the feeder on cost or handling.

What the climate does, and what to bring because of it

Belize is hot and humid all year, with a wet season from roughly June to November and drier months from February to May, and the country sits in the hurricane belt: Lisa came ashore at Belize City in November 2022, and the port and the airport close ahead of any named storm and reopen only after inspection. The practical conclusion is the same as for the wider Caribbean. Ship to arrive in the dry months where you can; where you cannot, widen the arrival window and keep the essentials with you.

The humidity is permanent and it shapes what is worth shipping. Solid timber from a dry Indian city can swell and warp in a coastal Belizean home, and termites are a real presence in the country; an old teak chest may be worth the risk, a veneered wardrobe from a furniture showroom may not. Belize runs on 110 volts at 60 hertz with North American sockets, so Indian 230-volt appliances need step-up transformers or replacement, and motorised equipment tends to suffer at the wrong frequency even with one. Laptops and phones are fine. The kitchen, on the whole, is better bought in Belize.

Belize drives on the right. An Indian right-hand-drive car is the wrong way round for its roads, which settles the vehicle question before customs even enters into it.

Customs at Belize City, in customs terms

Belize Customs & Excise assesses imports for duty and for General Sales Tax, which stands at twelve and a half per cent, along with environmental and other levies on particular goods. Used household effects imported by someone genuinely taking up residence can qualify for relief, and retirees admitted under the country’s Qualified Retired Persons programme are granted duty exemptions on household goods and a personal vehicle within the terms of that programme. Our part in that is the customs side only: preparing the inventory, the valuation and the declaration so that whatever relief applies is claimed correctly and evidenced. We are a relocation partner, not an immigration adviser, and anyone considering the programme takes advice on it elsewhere.

What the customs officer at Belize City sees is a small country’s import stream, in which a container of used household goods from India is unusual. That makes the inventory more important, not less. It has to read as a home, with the quantities and the wear of a home, and it has to reconcile with the shipping bill filed on ICEGATE at the Indian end, because a discrepancy between the two documents is the commonest reason for a container to be opened.

A working calendar for the corridor

Step Belize-specific note
Survey and quote Video survey from any Indian city; the quote names the hub and the feeder rotation it assumes
Export paperwork Shipping bill on ICEGATE, AD code, valued inventory prepared for Belize Customs & Excise
Packing and dispatch Export-grade packing with a tropical arrival in mind: desiccant, breathable wrapping, timber checked
Deep-sea leg to the hub Roughly four to six weeks to Houston or a Caribbean hub
Feeder to Belize City Days at sea; the wait for the rotation is the variable
Clearance and delivery A few days once the declaration is accepted; longer if the container is examined

Door to door, most sea moves on this corridor land between seven and ten weeks, which sits a little beyond the port-to-port range because the feeder rotation and Belizean clearance are honest additions rather than padding. Air freight into Philip Goldson via Houston or Miami arrives within days and prices by weight; it carries the essentials while the household follows by sea.

How the cost comes together

Volume first, and on this corridor most households are groupage rather than a full container, which shares the cost and widens the window. Hub choice second, because Houston and Kingston carry different feeder frequencies and different handling charges. Then Belize City port and handling, customs brokerage, the duty and GST assessed on the goods where relief does not cover them, and delivery: Belize City and Belmopan are straightforward, San Ignacio and Corozal are a few hours by road, and Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker need a further boat leg from the mainland that is planned around the water taxi and barge schedules. Insurance is priced against the declared value and should be read for weather delay. Most of the freight is billed in US dollars, and the Belize dollar is fixed at two to one against it, so the currency question sits entirely on the rupee side.

After the port: delivery, unpacking, waiting

Belize City is the port, but it is not where most people from India settle. Belmopan is an hour and a half inland on the George Price Highway; San Ignacio is another hour beyond it; Corozal and Orange Walk are north on the Philip Goldson Highway; and the cayes are reached from the water taxi terminal in Belize City. Delivery to any of them is planned as its own leg with its own day, and for the cayes the container is unstuffed on the mainland and the goods cross as loose cargo on a barge, so the packing has to survive a second handling in the open air. The crew unpacks to flat surfaces, reassembles what was dismantled in India and removes the packing material, which in a small country with limited waste handling is a courtesy the neighbours notice.

If the house is not ready, or the Belize address is still being chosen, the shipment can wait in one of two places. Storage in India before dispatch is cheaper and keeps the Belizean duty assessment from starting; storage in Belize after clearance is dearer but puts the goods a day from your door. Given the length of the ocean leg and the feeder wait, most families on this corridor are better served by holding in India until they have a lease, and we say so at the survey rather than filling a warehouse in Belize City.

Three questions we hear about moving to Belize

Can the shipment go to San Pedro directly?

Not from the ship. Containers land at Belize City and cargo for Ambergris Caye crosses by barge or water taxi from the mainland, then travels by golf cart or small truck on the island. It works, and it is planned as its own leg with its own timing.

Is it cheaper to buy furniture in Belize than to ship it?

Often, for ordinary pieces. Belize imports most of its furniture, so local prices are not low, but the freight, duty and climate risk on a container of showroom furniture from India add up. Family pieces, books, kitchenware and the things that make a house yours travel well; flat-pack and veneer generally do not earn their place in the container.

Which Indian port will our container leave from?

Whichever is closest to your origin and has the better connection to the chosen hub in that month: Nhava Sheva or Mundra from the north and west, Chennai from the south-east, Cochin from Kerala. The choice is made at booking, not by default.
