Project Cargo & Heavy Lift Logistics
Oversized, heavy and project consignments — planned with route surveys, lifting studies and permits, and moved on the right equipment for each leg.
Project cargo is what happens when the shipment will not fit in a container and cannot be treated as freight in the ordinary sense — a transformer, a pressure vessel, a piece of plant, a complete production line. These moves are engineering exercises before they are transport exercises, and the planning is where they are won or lost.
We plan and execute over-dimensional and heavy-lift movements end to end: surveying the route, studying the lifts, arranging the permits and escorts, and matching each leg to the right equipment — flat-rack and open-top containers, breakbulk on conventional vessels, roll-on/roll-off, or specialised road trailers for the inland legs. The aim is a move where every constraint has been found on paper before the cargo is on the road.
What you get with this service.
Route survey
The inland route checked for real — bridge limits, turning radii, overhead clearances, weak culverts — so a trailer does not meet a bridge it cannot cross with the cargo already loaded.
Lifting & method
Lift studies and a method statement for how the cargo is picked, secured and set down at each transfer, with the crane or gear specified for the weight.
Permits & escorts
Over-dimensional movement permits, police and pilot-vehicle escorts, and the timing windows that heavy loads are restricted to.
Multimodal execution
The right mode for each leg — breakbulk, RORO, flat-rack, or heavy road trailer — coordinated so the cargo is not stranded between two of them.
The plan is the product
With ordinary freight, you book and it moves. With project cargo, the booking is the last thing that happens. First the cargo is measured and weighed exactly, because a trailer’s route is decided by centimetres and a vessel’s stowage by tonnes. Then the route is surveyed — not on a map, but physically, for the bridge that will not take the axle load and the roundabout the trailer cannot get around. Then the lifts are studied, the permits applied for, and only then is the move scheduled.
Skip any of that and the failure is expensive and public: a load that cannot pass a bridge with the cargo already on it, a crane that turns out to be under-rated, a permit that was not in hand when the escort arrived. We would rather spend the time on the plan.
One coordinator across many parties
A project move pulls in more parties than any other — the shipper, the crane operator, the road-permit authorities, the police escort, the port, the vessel, the receiver. The single most valuable thing we provide is that one person holds all of it, so the crane and the trailer and the permit and the sailing line up on the same day rather than each being someone else’s problem.
Questions we are asked a lot.
What counts as project or heavy-lift cargo?
Anything that exceeds the limits of standard containerised carriage — over-width, over-height, over-length or over-weight — or that needs special handling to lift and secure. If you are not sure whether your cargo qualifies, send us the dimensions and weight and we will tell you what it needs.
How far ahead should we start planning?
Earlier than most people expect. Route surveys, permits and specialised equipment all have lead times, and permit windows and escort availability can constrain when a load may move. The cargo being ready is rarely the bottleneck — the approvals are. The sooner we start, the more options stay open.
Do you handle the lifting as well as the transport?
We plan and coordinate the lifts as part of the move — the method, the gear rating and the securing — working with crane and rigging specialists. The point of a single coordinator is that the lift and the transport are planned together, not booked by two parties who each assume the other has it covered.
